Just had a CLOSE look at one of my pics and hellfire! does my sensor need a clean!
Seems like the in-camera auto clean just cannot handle the build up of c**p on the sensor.
Thought it was about time I invested in a cleaning kit!
Anyone used either of these? Thoughts please!
Please dont reccomend a rediculous priced kit, I just cannot afford it, these seem reasonable at 15 & 11 quid, just what I want to spend.

After a wet clean smeared oil drops all over my D200's sensor, I thought I had done it terminal damage (the results looked like scratches...) but a quick once over with a SensorKlear restored it to pristine cleanliness. I tend to treat them as a one-off type of thing (fortunately, my current DSLR doesn't suffer from dust bunnies - it has a self cleaning cycle for them) then relegate them to lesser duties (LCD screens, filters etc). IIRC, I bought several when 7dayshop had them on special offer at about a fiver each.
 
I've got a LensPen SensorKlear kit with the pen, blower and a loupe and it cost around £30. The loupe is a great help to see where the dust is so I can concentrate the blower on a particular area and then a once over with the pen. The pen alone isn't too expensive and can be used repeatedly so IMO is a really good investment.

I've used the kit 7 or 8 times so far for my own and other peoples cameras so it was money very well spent compared to the £30-50 charged in shops. So far I've not charged anyone for cleaning as it's been for close friends, but if I charged a tenner a time I'd soon get my money back.
 
I have used both the SensorKlear pens and the Visible Dust swabs on the D80 sensor, the Sensorklear left some residue which was cleaned up with the Visible Dust swabs. May be the Sensorklear pen I had was faulty as others have had success with it.
 
A blower and lenspen sensorklear pen is all I used to clean my sensor recently. A sensor loupe makes the job easier and faster but is necessary, you will just have keep taking test shots.
 
Thanks for the replies guys, seems like its 3-1 for the pen then! (Isn't that poetic?)

Once I have made up my mind, I'll report on what I find. :D

I've a Lenspen Sonsorklear (so FIL) and def recommend one...

If you want to pop up and try it out or I can pop down if it's more convenient, so you can try it out before you decide / buy one, your more than welcome :thumbs:

Lo Baz whats throwing me is why use a lens Pen on a sensor surely it should be a sensor pen, is there a difference of the glass your cleaning I dont know but the idea of pen sounds like scrubbing to me like when you rub hard to remove a pencil line and damage the paper, if you get what i mean, Ive sen some sort of pads and fluid that sound better then rubbing with a pen, and how do you get in the corners or are you doing a sinbad clean LOL

As you know I use an Arctic butterfly

No Dave, its a Lenspen SensorKlear pen, specially made for cleaning sensors!
I presume it is made from different stuff (material?) from the Lenspen for lens glass.
It's this one May even go for the kist with loupe.

ah ok Id go for dry clean first, and dont use a rocket blower on it it will make it worse in my experience

Too late mate! My wrist is aching from puffing, and I've generated enough wind to start a hurricane! :$
 
This is to say thanks to Andy (Red) for inviting me to his home and not just cleaning my sensor for me, but explaning in detail how it was done. I can now clean my own sensor with confidence knowing it wont fall to pieces when I touch it. He has also proved that the Lenspen SensorKlear works just fine, with no streaks or residue left behind, and I now have a lovely dust-bunny clear sensor!

Now THAT is what this forum is all about, fellow togs helping each other in nice friendly way.
I will be ordering one this week. (hmmm, with loupe or without:thinking:)

(and the coffee wasn't bad either!)

Glad we got it cleaned and you feel happier now undertaking a clean. As we talked about, I've been very pleased with it and had no issues.

I'd try your own loupe first to see if it's of any help, the loupe kit seems to be about £15 more than just the pen...

Well, I ordered one! THIS one from Amazon, a bargain methinks!
Decided to go with the loupe kit as it just seemed to be good value and gets good reviews. I'll let you know how I get on with it!

That's roughly what I brought for £30, except not including the blower as I already had one so definitely a bargain. You will be glad you brought the sensor loupe.
 
Well, what can I say! Arrived this morning! (been out all day though!) Amazon, (well, Great Western Cameras actually) have both excelled with both price and delivery. Estimated DOD was 1st to 5th March, outstanding service!

On opening, all was in good condition. Took out the plastic tray with the item in and you get, A loupe with body cover and eyepiece cap, 6 batteries, (it takes 3, but you get 3 spare!), a decent 'Hurricane' blower, the SensorKlear II pen itself and a velor carry bag with toggle to put it all in for your camera bag. Plus of course, instructions.
Build and material quality seems fine, but time will tell. Not used it yet, as it has just been cleaned as mentioned previous, courtesy of AndyRed :thumbs:
When I use it, I will report back, may even do a 'How to' now I am an expert! :D

Had a good day Andy! Managed 7 1/2 miles, creamed crackerd when I got back to the car (it was parked in the pub car park!) but soon recovered with an excellent pub meal at the Shovels Inn at Hambleton. Highly reccomend this pub for the food and beer, of which they have a great selection of both. Got a few good pics with no dust spots on them!

Excellent - you certainly had a cracking day for it, I've been up in Settle today and apart from being freeing this morning, it's been beautiful all day - only thing thats let it down (apart from being in work) is nothing was low flying ...

Video! Never thought of that,:thinking: was just going to do a step by step with pics. Hmmm, need to have a think about that!

Settle! one of my favourite chippy's there! just oposite the car park.
Naked Man's not bad either!
Nothing fantastic came in shot of the camera today, but saw a couple of hares, couple of buzzards, thousands of finches and a few Brents. Nice large flock of Canada Geese flying in. Spring is in the air!

Yes very difficult to walk past at lunch time that chippy...

Thankful not seen any naked men in the cafe :D
