Vista help!

Right my friend has been using vista with his laptop from from comet. He`s trying to use the windows explorer but it wont open for him!

This is what he told me.


well it started with me tryna update avg but it wouldnt let me so i was told by the help manager to turn automatic updates on, by going on run>services.msc and turning on the automatic updates there from manual to automatic. after that i decided to run a windows update cause its been awhile, i had service pack 1, before downloading it though i think the net went
but anyway i keep on downloading windows updates now im on service pack 2 nd still no budge
router says im fully connected to the internet, i can use 3rd party software like msn, ventrillo, teamspeak, and log into wow. my xbox thats using the same router can log into live nd download stuff. even plugged the laptop via wires nd nothing still so cant be wireless or the router
opening a internet page gives me this message

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

What you can try:
Diagnose Connection Problems

the diagnose connection tool says there is nothing wrong with it

well i obv turned it off nd on and the router aswell disconnecting it from the fone line nd putting it back waiting 30secs ect

Its not the router at fault if other devices (xbox) are able to access the net.

I would suggest checking to make sure there are no proxy settings setup (odd but I have seen it happen) within Internet Explorer.

Maybe run a spyware/malware scan?

ask em if i set up a proxy will all my internet brousers use that
cause i set up one with random numbers hence why i maybe not be able to log on the net

Agreed, proxy settings need to be blank

Generally companies use whats called a proxy server so requires settings

Home connections dont use them
