Just been trying to set up my daughters Laptop christmas present, so when she opens it on the day all will be running ok.
I have set up most of the software programs with ease, But i am finding it hard to get a internet connection.

We have all been running XP, with my my main PC and Voyager 2100.
My daughter and son have been running XP with a 1060 adapters.

I have tried to load the disc for the 1060 laptop adapter but keep getting an error. Not sure where to go from there.
Placing the adapter into the card slot, it seems to stick out quite a way.
The laptop being a Toshiba L300D wireless & wifi, do i need the adpater? am i doing something wrong.

Not being used to Vista its getting a real task...

any ideas would be gratfull.

A quick google tells me it already has wireless built in, so you won't need the adapter.

It should already be setup as part of the Vista installation, there should a network incon in the system tray when you boot up, it'll say it's not connected. Click on it until the window pops up, search for networks, and away you go..

It may also however have a physical button on the laptop to turn it on, have a check :)

If it's the same as the Toshiba I'm using at the moment then the wifi on button is just below the power and battery lights at the front

I am going to sound like a right idiot, But i suspect you mean in the System Tray you mean on the task bar?.
I have the internet Explorer up the light is on for the wirless connection
but no connection, I have tried to search for a network, none availible..

I too had this bother with my lap top and using vista and wanting to be wireless.

I rang 'netscape' who supplied the router and they talked me through it, you need to change a certain number.

I cant remember what number but there is no way i could of worked it out.

Be aware the operator was very foreign and it took about 20 mins.

first port of call is ring the internet provider mine is AOL

The system trays is the section of the taskbar where the clock is etc!

Alternatively, click Start -> Contral Panel -> Network and Internet -> Connect to a Network
 
Thanks all for the feed back, and perhaps if nothing else works i will try the provider as jolsterj suggested.
But have to place this one on HOLD for now as my daughter is returning home soon, I have to hide the laptop away as to not spoil the fun.
I am sure i will get there , but am getting to an age where its all getting to complicated.

Anyway i may well be back, but for now.

When I set up my sisters it was really simple. All I did was right click the network sign (two little computer screens with a X through them) in the lower right tool bar (where the time is) and then 'connect to a network' Once it opens it up you should see your network. Simple click on it and hit 'connect' Then all you need to do is type in the network key/pass that you should find on the underside/back of your wifi router. You shouldn't need to install anything, or add anything to the laptop. HTH.
 
Thats what is was the 'NETWORK KEY' that I had to get from the online help.
 
I'm using a 300d at the moment and it located the router signal straight away when I turned it on 6 months ago with no problems and I just had to login. However, my sister has the same model and when we set it up for her the internal WiFi could not establish contact with the router and we had to install the dongle which came with the router and she used for a week. Then on turning the laptop on it 'suddenly' saw the router, God knows why and she could take the dongle out and it's been OK for the last 4 months. Computers! you stand (nearly) as much chance in understanding women. And I've been married 40 years.
 
ideally if your wireless switch is ON (Displaying the light) then you should be able to search for all wireless networks within a certain radius. This include nextdoors wireless if they have it.
You should be able to see your interent connection from this search (usually named after the Broadband provided or the name of the actual wireless box)
Click on the correct wireless connection and then hopefully, if you have previously set your password/network key for this network, it should prompt you for this password/network key. This infomation can be found on the bottom f your wireless box.
Then, once you have done this you *Should* now be connected and able to surf the net.
 
The problem you have is that you have the network hidden on the voyager wireless modem.
I had one of them a long time ago if i remember rightly you go on your xp pc open explorer and type in voyager.home where you usually type in www. whatever.com
it should access the voyager modem then click advanced it will prompt you for password and username
thatt should be admin for password and admin for username
It will then let you acess the settings look on the left for wireless then uncheck hide network or might be ssd (cant remember) and then click save it should then show up connect your laptop and save settings then go back on the xp machine and hide the network click save settings
once you have connected the modem will recognise the laptop when you next connect

also some laptops have to have the wireless switched on manually with a switch on the laptop or might even be a shortcut on the keyboard something like fn+P if its a new laptop it will have all drivers installed ready to go straight from the box

Just checked the details out, It tells me that i have the wireless connection Enabled.
The other two laptops in the house are working off cards BT1060s, which pickup the Voyager 2100 ok.
so still a little in the dark with this, but as said before i am unable to work on the laptop, to many busy eyes..

It will say that wireless is enabled but you need to find the checkbox that says Hide Network that is why the new laptop cannot find the signal because it is hidden you have to do this through the earlier suggestion of opening internet explorer on your main xp machine typing in voyager.home

Thanks all, and Steffyboy,
Just returned from a few days away, and theres nothing like your own home.

Going back to the subject, my main problem i found that i had to download the drivers, from that point all fell into place.

So many thanks and have a healthy new year..
