Ok. So if I have a folder full of images, as long as the list is so long I have to scroll to see the bottom, Windows Explorer locks up when I attempt to scroll. What the crap?!?! It doesn't happen every time, but probably like 95% of the time.

Anyone else have this issue and do you know of a way to end it?
 
running vista but dont have that problem, change the view?

I cant help with the scroll problem but why not split the main folder into two or three folders.

Just idea.
 
Sounds like you've either run out of CPU steam or not enough RAM.
It's probably converting all of the images to thumbnails on the fly.

I've been running vista for months now and never had a lock-up (but then I do have a quad core and 3gig of memory).
 
Does it only lock-up if you open the folder and start scrolling down the page within the first minute of the computer being on?
 
Have you got Aero turned On or Off, whichever try changing it. Also try dropping your screen resolution, rebooting then changing it back up
 
Try scrolling using the arrow keys or page up/down - I want rule out a conflict with the mouse s/w.

Well that stumps that theory then. I scroll wheel everywhere (my overly clever mouse even scrolls goes sideways).

I'd have to go for a driver issue as the next bet. Is it trying to create thumbnails from RAW files (it may be you've got an old or corrupted driver)

Could you elaborate about exactly what happens. Does the window lock up and die or just freeze/pause for a while?

Scrolling one line at a time with the arrow key works but a page at a time with page down doesn't - what happens?

Have you checked that your mouse driver is up to date (the latest avaliable)?

Do you have other scrolly things like graphics tablets plugged in?

Its Apple, who knows :)

It'll be the Macbook and Macbook Pro definately plus the iMac is based on laptop technology and as such there is a replacement chipset for that too. Its less likely but there is a possibility.

Now I wish I had waited 3 months :) No i'm not really that bothered....
 
Ok, pxl8, this is what happens. I open a folder that has enough images so that it doesn't show all of the files in the folder without you scrolling down. No matter how long I let the folder sit there, if I scroll to see more of the files, windows explorer locks up and has to "restart". I have it in "detailed" view, but there is a small preview in the right hand side and this may be what's getting me. Is there a way to turn this preview off? Still getting the knack of Vista. :D

Thanks for responses guys. And I would love a Mac, but just can't justify the extra cost and having to learn a new operating system (and teach my family one too lol).

In explorer click Organise then Folder and Search options. On the General tab check that 'show previews and filters' is selected. OK out of it.

Now go to Organise again and choose layout where you will see Preview Pane - click it to close the preview pane.

There may be an easier way but it is what I just did to turn it off after turning it on to see what you were talking about and then not seeing an obvious way to turn it off :)

My money would be on a faulty driver too. Could be something that seems unrelated like sound or video. Look for updates (or roll back to previous version) for everything! good luck.
 
Is the indexing sytem switched on, it can slow things down if it is trying to do this over a large number of files/images?
 
I'd go for a driver too. Either HD/IDE/Sata/Mobo.....or Video (in that order).
 
What kind of files are in the folder? Is it just jpeg? Raw? Mixed?

Does it always crash at the same point?

Does it crash if you go to c:\windows\ and scroll?
 
In the mouse properties wheel options set the vertical scroll to 1 line at a time rather than 1 scroll at a time.. Adjust the 1 to suit yourself.
 
Ok, CT, thought that was working, then explorer restarted... again.

PsiFox, the system indexer? If so, I think I turned it off, can't remember. And don't remember how to check that. lol.

And I'm thinking driver now too, Marcel.

pxl8, most RAW files (99%) of the time anyway. And no, it doesn't do it when I go to Windows and scroll.

Thanks, leon, but I really like the entire scroll instead of one at a time. Honestly should be a way to do this lol.
 
Out of interest, if you uninstall the codec does the scrolling start working?
