VISTA! UGH!!!

Right, so it seems its a problem with the codec :)

I would do what was said above. The indexing can be a big issue in Vista.

I have it and its a propper PITA.

I forgot to turn it off when I rebuit my pc and it hacked me off for 3 weeks solid till I rememberd to disable it

This may be a bit of a long shot, but what graphics card do you have? Some graphic cards have a thing called TurboCache (or whatever ATI's equivalent is..) which basically "borrows" some of the main system RAM to make it perform better.

While rendering the previews, your graphic card (if you even have one with TurboCache) may be borrowing too much memory, therefore causing this crash.

Just a theory though..

I think we've established it's a problem with the codec rather than the gfx card drivers or vista's indexing. It seems the codec doesn't play nice as others have reported similar issues with crashing. I don't have it installed but the canon one seems to work just fine so I guess it's a case of waiting for Nikon to come up with a fix :(
