Vivid orange lens flare

I took several photos down on the Wales Coastal path today - D90 with the 18-55mm kit lens, no lens hood. I got a fair amount of lens flare when I pointed the camera in the general direction of the sun, which wasn't unexpected. I've never seen this vivid orange lens flaring before, though. Is it normal?

Yes and no! Even a lens hood will not cut out all flare when the camera is almost directly facing the sun, but every little helps

Heh! Yeah, I meant "just" as in "my lens isn't malfunctioning" rather than a hood being a cure-all.

Am I weird (don't all shout yes) but I quite like lens flare in/on a photo :)
 
We both must be a bit weird then cause I've got a few landscape sunset photos that have got a few lens flares in and TBH I think they make the photo. They were taken with a 550D and a 100-400 L with a hood on, but the sun was Very low and straight on towards me but I really like them.

Depends on the shot! There's a filling station up on the Moor that sells Flare fuel and I have a shot of the sign that has the sun deliberately included in the frame. It's on film though and I'm not sure exactly where the neg is so can't easily post.

As for your (undeniable!) weirdness - no comment :p
