To illuminate the scene I used a flash of bare hand shot the wall that was behind me. The little retouching having is with Camera raw to adjust a little "revealed" and Photoshop CS6 to give shade and add some vignetting.

Wont hear a lot with the needle in the air.

I wondered about the shelf unit ... but they give "Place"
But I do find it a little too tight on the right.
a flip of the shelf unit, added to the other side, might have been good.

The diagram you give disregards the majority of the actual shapes tones and placements in the composition

The protagonist does not hear the music of the gramophone but hear voices coming from inside, so the needle is unimportant.

I hadn't noticed that, but now you point it out, I think it adds something; what can the subject hear if the record isn't playing?

Thats a cool photo fella. Considering you used just a bare speedlight. Do you say the speedlight was aimed at the wall behind you the photographer ?

Very nice shot, just goes to show what can be achieved with just one light and a bit of editing.
