VPN - Is that what I need?

Yes
I want a few programs to be able to access the web wherever I go but because they use random ports they don't work unless I can port forward a router. From what I understand I need to use a VPN and potentially SSL or something like that to do this? Channeling it through port 80?

Yeah I have not much knowledge on this subject, am I on the right lines? At the moment I just bought a cheap subscription to blackVPN but can't get it working on a computer without forwarding ports like 1138 (or similar). Is there any way around this?

So you take your laptop on the road, and access the internet, then the applications should work...

but because they use random ports they don't work unless I can port forward a router.

Err, many applications have a tendency to use random ports in some form, however most initiate connections on specific ports and then randomly assign from a range of ports to continue the transaction. Some always uses the same ports for all transactions.

Nope, not unless the network you're connecting to needs you to VPN into it.

I don't think so, unless you've phrased the question incorrectly.

Nope.

Trying to read between the lines....

Are you trying to access applications on a machine at home/work from another device (e.g. a laptop) elsewhere on the internet?

No regularly use internet at various locations where only port 80 etc are open (to stop torrenting and such like). Problem is other applications I use (not thinking of torrents here) use random ports which won't connect a lot of the time without port forwarding. Now it's my understanding that I can use a VPN to bypass that issue so I don't need to set up port forwarding on all the routers (I can or can't get access to) but just set it up in the VPN control panel or something?

Have I been told wrong? I'm guessing something is wrong somewhere along the lines.

So essentially I want to use a commercial VPN connection to browse the internet and allow my applications to send/recieve data but I sometimes can't port forward for them to work.

Potentially, but can you port forward with those either?

Either way I'd rather just use something cheap and (I was told) easy than shell out £15+ a month for something I rarely need.:(

I think your problem is that in places where you "work" security is enabled to stop such traffic. Now you many not think that you're doing anything wrong, but that security is there for a reason (and it may no just be about file sharing).

If you need access to these ports to do your job you need to get the IT bods on site to open them up for your profile.

A VPN just encrypts traffic over the public Internet - hence "Virtual" Private Network. I don't think that port address translation is what you need, but I may be wrong...

What exactly do you want to access or do?

Actually it seems it now works out the box (the VPN)... I guess maybe it takes some time to get the username and password into the system or I changed a setting this time round...

Thanks everyone though for trying to help.:)

And the difference is a reasonable VPN costs a few pounds a month, 3g (aside from being potentially dog slow) is far more expensive.:)

When I take my laptop out and about i do not need a VPN for programs to access the web.

That was why I asked what you were trying to utilise

Cool, when I looked in here first thing this morning there was nothing more on the thread, I go away and sort out a flash related thread for the day, come back and all is good!

Now you've explained what you needed it for VPN's definitely the way to go. You can also make use of it when on public WiFi spots to protect your traffic too. Oh, and when you want access to sites where content's restricted to people actually in that country (like iPlayer if they have a UK server)

I may have just found out Pandora works with this VPN as well...:rules:

Wasn't the main aim but it's a definate positive...

I thought they shut down their UK streaming a couple of years ago after a tussle over rights costs?

e2a: I use Spotify these days.

Yes they have. VPN's can give you IP's from all over the world though...

Got to say Pandora was/is far better than Last.fm, and I also think spotify.:)
