Yes
I’m considering a Nikon 70-300 VR for use on garden birds. VR cos my hands shake (at 84 ☹️)
I recall reading VR is switched “Off” if on a tripod - True ?!

Because a non VR is cheaper ❗

For the higher shutter speeds needed for the little garden birds you could probably get away without a remote, but for perched birds and lower SS a remote as Terry suggests may help.

VR should be turned off on a tripod because it can try to cancel non-existent vibration and actually blur the image.

Some lenses have a tripod sensing feature for their inbuilt stabilisation and no that's not an April 1st special.
Pretty sure the Canon 500/4 was one of them?

Yes, it has. By a couple of the magazines back when VR/IS/etc. was a new thing.
