What is the difference between a VR NIKKOR lens and a lens that is not a VR? Will VR improve image quality?

VR is Nikons term for vibration reduction, or image stabilisation. Lenses that have 'VR' can be used at a slower shutter speed than non VR lenses, but only when shooting stationary subjects.
When shooting with a long focal length lens, say 300mm, when you look through your cameras viewfinder the image you see will be jumping about and vibrating due to your inability to hold the camera perfectly still. With a VR lens, when you press the shutter button to focus the image will steady up as the VR system moves a lens element that counteracts your own movements, this results in a pretty steady image and will allow you to use a slower shutter speed than usual

Thanks!
Now what's the difference between a compact lens and a (I guess) 'standard' lens? Such as the 18-55mm lens that you can buy with new camera bodies.

"Compact" simply means "not very big". I don't think it has any other, more specialised or specific, connotations when applied to photographic equipment. But obviously it's a slightly subjective term and there's an implied comparison with other equipment which is similar but larger. (So for example with a CSC - compact system camera - the implied comparison is with a DSLR.) If you could point to some lenses which are "compact", we could see whether there's anything more to it than just this.
