I only recently found this site and what a good find. This is my first post and I'll keep it brief.
I've only ever used film, but I've more or less decided to buy a DSLR, possibly a Canon 40D. With the kit lens, how would the results compare with what I'm using at the moment ie. Olympus OM2n with Zuiko primes. If unfavourably, what would be good alternatives, not necessarily Canon, and how much would they cost? I've no idea, but if it's going to be expensive, one option which has occured to me, is to stick with film for landscape work, still doing my own processing and printing, and buy something like a Nikon D40x for general purpose use. Any thoughts from you erudite people? I've been dithering over this for months.

Have you set a budget?

What primes do you have at the minute? Canon does some reasonably priced primes that will get you good results, and the 40D is still a great camera.
 
Budget of about £600.
35mm 2.8 and 50mm 1.4.
(I hadn't decided on a title for the post and wanted to preview it, so typed in the first letters my fingers hit, then clicked on submit instead of preview, hence the blatant mistake).
 
How's about an olympus DSLR?

IIRC, the mount is quite backwards compatible, so you can use the fantastic zuiko lenses you already have on it (with a 2x crop factor though, so you may have to add a newer UWA designed for the 2x sensor if you want to go wide).
 
You should be fine with a Canon D40, I changed from an Olympus OM1n to a 350D and was suprised how digital had surpassed film even with the supposedly rubbish kit lens, so with a 40D you'll have no problems, certainly with a half reasonable lens on the front.
