Im hoping for a bit of help deciding what lens to get.I have just bought an eos 1d mk2 that i plan to use with my 100-400 for wildlife etc.with this camera being more robust than my 5d mk2 i also plan on using it for general snaps.in other words im going to use it for what other people may use a compact for.so im looking a CHEAP walkabout lens for it.I aslo have a 17-40l lens for the 5d and landscapes but feel this is to good a lens to have on the 1d when for example taking pics of the kids in the snow or the dogs on the beech etc and i also what a longer reach somthing like a 17-70 or 17-85.as i say ill not be entering any of the pics from it into compitions or the like so must be cheap as i think(or the wife thinks)ive spent enough this year on gear.

How about a 28-135 IS? Around 200 i think, its a awsome len's aswell, fairly heavy though...
 
I love how you say a 17-40 L is too good to take pics of kids.

Personally, I'd spend the money on a filter to protect the front element and a lens-coat to protect the barrel, then just use the 17-40L!
You're going to be carrying the weight of a 1D round, might as well do it justice with an L series you already own!
 
i dont think 17-40 is enough though as a general walkabout lens,and i would rather just have it always fixed to the 5d.i forgot to add that im also unsure what lens i can use with the 1d being 1.3 crop?

Any EF mount lens certainly. I wouldn't risk an EF-s though.
 
i like the sound of the 28-135 because of the reach.how do you rate the tamron
 
I don't, I've never used one, but this review compares it to the sigma 24-70 and canon 24-105L (note they're both twice or more as expensive), and it performs just as well in terms of optical quality.

Only falls down on build quality and AF.
Doesn't have IS, but it's nearly a stop faster at 28mm and nearly 2 stops faster at 75mm than the canon 28-135mm. Would you rather have 135mm f/5.6 and IS + USM or 75mm f/2.8 without IS/USM?
