What would anyone suggest being the best walk about lens for canon?

The lenses which are on my camera the most when out and about are either Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 or EF50mm f1.8 they work for me, they probably won't be considered wide enough by some for walkabout though.

Lots of variables here and potentially a real can of worms...

nevertheless, and my opinion only :)

Zoom: Canon 24-105mm f/4

Prime: Canon 35mm f/1.4

cheers

I agree with you on the 35mm, great focal length.

However, the f/1.4 is very expensive!!

Money is better spent on the f/2 version unless money isn't an issue (but if you can afford the f/1.4 go for it!). I have the f/2 and it's a brilliant lens, such good iq and you can pick one up for about £300 or £150 or so used. Billy bargain!

But we can't give you a definitive answer unless we know what you're shooting and what you are shooting with. I can use my Canon 10-22 or my 70-200 as a walkabout, depending where I am or what I'm shooting! I have however also got an 18-135 which I use as a "do it all" lens for when I'm tired and less enthusiastic!

I'd always take a 28-200 just so I cover all possibilities, although picture quality wont be as good as using a prime!
