Walk around lens

I'm considering a all purpose walk around lens, for those situations where changing would mean missing a shot. The lenses I'm considering are:

I want to avoid spending over £600 on the Nikon equivalent as I will only be using for the 'walk around' situations; I'll still be keeping and using my current lenses just as much.
 
Hi have you looked at the tameron 18-270? Or the Sigma 18-250 they both seem to be good for the money
 
which is the better out of these two? I don't know the terminology of Sigma and Tamron, but ideally I'd like to have the equivalent of Nikons VR and AF.
 
Guaranteed to work or be fixed if something goes wrong. With new lenses you get an amount of warranty...

I'm sure that's right for the people on here, but you don't know who's selling on places like Ebay etc!
 
There are plenty of reputable 2nd hand kit dealers around and they offer warranties on almost all kit - 3 months or more is pretty standard. Have a look at Mifsuds, Ffordes, MPB (who advertise on this forum) and others who advertise in the magazines.

Sigma's version of VR is O(ptical)S(tabilisation) and Tamron's version is V(ibration)C(ontrol). They both works very well IME.

I'm using a Tamron 18-270 as a walkabout lens on my old D70 and it seems to work very well. The version I have is suitable for the Nikon bodies with no AF motor but I can't find the Tamron designation for that feature. Nikon call it AF-S and Sigma HSM.
 
Thanks John! I'll have a look at those dealers while considering the acronyms you've informed me of :) so are you saying the Tamrom 18-270 you have doesn't have auto focus?

The Tamron does have autofocus,but some Nikon body don't have autofocus build into their bodies,so you will need the autofocus motor build into the lens.

*warning: obvious new person question alert!*

how do I know if my camera has a AF motor?
 
As Simon's said, the lens I have does have the AF motor built into the lens, although my old D70 has one in its body. (The systems are different but bodies with motors in them can also drive the newer AF-S lenses via electronic contacts rather than the "screw drive")
 
Thank you - so mine (D3200) doesn't have a AF motor so I'll need to make sure any lens has an AF motor.

I cannot find any cheap bodies? They are in the range of £400-£500 which is far too much when it's only a hobby.
