Walkabout lens choice

A question for the wealth of knowledge on here.

My current kit is a Canon 40d with a 18-55 kit lens (borrowed from a friend at work) and a 55-250 lens. My next purchase is a nifty fifty in the next couple of weeks.

I want to keep my kit as light as possible with just a couple of lenses in my camera bag, long term want to replace the 55-250 with a 70-200 :D for the sports that i participate in and follow (triathlon and waterpolo). For my other 'walkabout' lens which will replece the 18-55 that i will have to return to my work colleague. Looking ito the options available i think that the canon 15-85 is the best in the price i can afford, around £500.

Is there anything else that i am missing or should be looking at?

might get a 24-105 f4L second had for that money, it's light and a great quality lens, perfect for walkabout on FF or cropped body
 
Wouldn't 24 be a tiny bit too long on the wide side of things on cropped bodies? Is there nothing equivalent to the 18-105 on the Canon side?
 
I have a 70-200 f4L and am looking to get a 24-105 f4L next. I think the combo of those two lenses are perfect for everyday walkabouts,plus you are getting quality glass.

Get the 15-85, it's a great lens and better than the 24-105 as a walkabout on a cropped body. 24mm on a croppy is just too wide imho.

I had a 24-105 on my 7D and previously on a 40D and 30D and it's a great lens, but I spent a lot of time swapping between it and my 10-22. Last October I bought the 15-85 and last month I sold the 24-105 because I had never used it again since getting the 15-85.
 
What about the canon 17-55 2.8 IS??? I have one for sale if yoour interested?

A lot of people have said this but I've got a 24-105L and I use a 50D.
I only need to go wider for landscapes and my 10-22 tend to take care of those.
Having said that I've taken quite a few at 24mm on the 24-105L and I think it's quite a versatile lens.
 
Tamron 18-250mm?

I have one for sale on another forum. Once I got this I sold my 2.8 Tamron and enjoyed the range that the zoom gave me.

Thanks for the replies, certainly lots to think about! Hopefully going to try one out and see how it feels, also been reminded by the better half that I could get the f4 70-200 if my mate at work will let me hold onto his 17-55mm.

Agree - if I want wider than 24-105 I use my 17-40 but no need to even in city, only for landscape or specialist shots. Wider than 24 and you risk heavy barreling for a general use/walkabout.
