Hi,

Thinking of buying a Nikon D7100.

What is a reasonable walkabout lens?

I currently have 18-105, 35, 70-300 and token 12-24.

I'd read that the 18-105 isn't that great with high megapixel cameras -- I've been using it on a D90

What would other people recommend for a walkabout lens? I've read the comparisons between 18-105 and 16-85

Thanks

As a single lens option on a crop sensor, I'd go for the Nikkor 18-200 and never change the lens!

16-85 all day long. Perfect walkabout lens and better than the 18-70 or 18-105.

Couple of hundred quid used.

I use a 16 to 85vr for my work (general shots on a DX body). I am really impressed, I have my own Pro lenses and the 16/85 looks just the same quality in general use, f8 ish. Only issue is we have had a few break down, but they do get bashed around and subject to fine dust environments so that may not be an issue. I generally prefer wider and fixed apertures so for my own walk-around zoom (I like primes) I have a Nikon 17 to 55, big but excellent quality, or my old Sigma 18 to 50 which is compact and performs well. I'm contemplating a Sigma 17 to 50 OS. Some people will recommend the Tamron 17 to 50 f2. 8. With both Sigma and Tamron you always have to hope you get a good one.

my walk about lens for my D7100 is a Sigma 24-70mm HSM f/2.8

My walkabout lens is the Nikon 16-85mm, has a very versatile focal length range and gets good results. I had chosen that lens before choosing the Nikon body, the D7100. No regrets whatsoever. I would like the slightly faster 16-80mm, but its a lot of money when I have other priorities.

24-70 - you won't be disappointed, Nikon if you can afford it, otherwise Tamron (I tried them all, Sigma performed the worst, which was a surprise for me because I normally get fab results with the other sigma lenses I own)

:plus1:

Nikon 18-200 covers just about everything.....it's my walkabout lens

Personally I'd keep the 18-105 and see how it performs on the D7100, it's quite a nice lens really, only issues being distortion at 18mm and the plastic mount.

Agree, then I'd look at the 16-80 or one of the 17-50/2.8s. As it happens, I've just been playing with a Tamron 17-50 (the non VC/VR version)... it's tiny compared to the Nikon and weighs less than the 18-200.

I've been looking in to this too, got it down to either the Tamron or Sigmar 17-50, question which one of the two and do I really need VR/VC with a short zoom like that?. Would be used for low light party's/gigs.
