Hi all!

My 18-55 kit lens on my 350D broke ages ago. I replaced it with a 50mm f1.8, but now am missing my zoom when I'm out and about. I have a 10-20mm and the Sigma 70-300. Also have a shiny new 50D.

Budget is no more than £300 unfortunately, and would be happy to hunt for something second hand, but this is my shortlist...

Canon EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM £289.99
Canon EF 24-85mm f3.5-4.5 USM £249.99
Canon EF 28-135mm f3.5-f/5.6 IS USM £282.99
Sigma 18-125mm f/3.5-5.6 DC OS HSM £205.00
Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG MACRO £284.99
Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS £265.00
Tamron 18-250mm F/3.5-6.3 Di ll LD Aspherical (IF) Macro £289.00

If I see a good landscape that needs a wide treatment, I'm happy to switch lenses, so losing the low end between 17-24mm isn't such a big deal.

At the other end, 70mm is what I get at the shortest end of the Sigma and I feel like I would need a bit more range, but probably not more than the 85. The Sigma 70-300 isn't a brilliant lens though so anything that eats into its range would save me image quality (and lens switching)

My first instinct was to go for the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 but I've read a couple of reviews that have said it suffers on a 50D body. So second choice would probably be the Canon 17-85 for the range, but the f4 worries me as does the build quality. It looks like it's made of the same stuff as my 18-55 kit lens which basically fell apart after 368 days :(.

Never had a Tamron lens, and reviews I've read have been mixed.

Andysnap recommended renting a couple to test them out, which is a good idea, but I thought I'd ask for views here before I rented anything.

I'd consider anything second hand that fell under the £300 bracket too.

Thoughts anyone?

I wouldn't rule out the sigma 17-70 it's a cracking lens for the money and would sit nicely in your range, would mean you would only need to get the 10-20 out for those extra wide moments.

if it wasn't a 17-70 for me I'd get either a sigma or tamron 24(ish)-70 f2.8.

Tamron 24-135mm. Not widely stocked. Full frame.

Can't really comment too much on the Sigm 24-70 f2.8 on a 50d body, but on my 40d is an amazing lens. Anyone else tried this combo?

Avoid the hyperzooms or whatever they are called (18-200 or 28-300 kinda thing)

I also agree the Siggy 17-70 is a great lens, again, not sure of the performance on a 50d.

How about swap your 50d for my 40d and then you can get a Sigma 24-70 and your happy ;) Haha!

Finally talked her round eh?

Andy
