Walkabout to go with 10-22mm & 50mm

Hi everyone

I have recently bought a 40D body second hand.

First thing I did was buy a 50mm 1.8, which is great. I've used it for some nice bokah shots and also found it good for taking photos round a campfire the other night, as it was short enough for me to use the built-in flash without getting a shadow from the lens. However I found it a bit limiting and would've liked a zoom. Saying that, I got some great shots with it, and the value is incredible.

I am also currently borrowing a Canon 10-22mm from my dad. I LOVE it, and almost always use it at 10mm for the special effects. It's so much fun. My dad currently uses a 1D as his main camera and kept this for his spare 40D, but he might be upgrading that to FF too, so I will hopefully be able to buy the 10-22mm from him.

I mostly take photos of things that are going on around me. I live a lifestyle that makes for lots of great daily action shots. I live on a sailing boat and do lots of sailing; also like to muck around with cars, etc. so the 10-22mm is great for fitting the whole boat in, and creating some nice effects when taken close-up to the car/boat etc. I love taking photos of people, which is where the 50mm comes in for close portraits.

But I think I'd like something to bridge the gap. My options seem to be:
- 17-55mm but ideally I'd like something at the bigger end
- 17-50 Tamron - good value but bit short and don't mind paying more for Canon to hold its value
- 15-85mm love the idea of this lens, but worried it's too much of a crossover with the 10-22mm, which I have no doubt I will carry on using at the 10mm end
- 24-105 might make a nice addition to the 10-22mm

Does anybody have any thoughts?

Personally I'd go for a 17-50mm f2.8 but if you want longer reach I wouldn't be worried about the crossover between the 15-85 and 10-20mm lenses.

I wouldn't go for the 24-105mm as it's big and heavy, not very wide at the wide and and it's f4... and IMVHO not particularly good when compared to the admittedly shorter range APS-C and particularly f2.8 options.
 
Going to disagree with Woof Woof and suggest the 24-105.

It's not that wide, but I find it wide enough for most things, and if not, like you I've got 10-20.

It's not that fast at F4, but it's sealed (with a UV filter on) which is a bonus for boat-life.

I find it sharp enough and a useful range on it too.

The 17-50 2.8... apparently a lovely lens, but you've only adding 21-49 to your exising range, albeit at a wider aperture.
 
Well, if an equiv FoV of 38mm at the wide end is ok then it's ok but weather sealing and f4 don't equal 17mm (equiv 27mm) and f2.8 if you want either :D

Personally I don't think that slow f4 FF zoom lenses are the best choice as a "standard" zoom on APS-C.

Choices choices... you make your choice and pay your money :D
 
Get the 15-85 it's a great lens. It'll take shots at the wide end that you'd need to change lenses if you had a 24-105. For general use I was using a 15-85 on a 7D but now using a 24-105 on a 6D. Love the 6D and nothing wrong with the 24-105 but do miss the 15-85 a lot.
 
I agree with Paul and Neil I dont think that 1 stop is all that much much nowdays, Maybe back in the days of film when 800 ISO was the limit but now days when we have cameras that shoot well at 3200 iso and higher that 1 stop is really only good bokeh and the guy has a nifty fifty for that.

The lens I would go for would be in this ordor 24-105mm 15-85mm 0r the 18-135mm STM. If finances are to stretched then either look second hand or look at the 17-85mm USM

efs 15-85 is an excellent crop walk about
you must also get the nifty 250
ie efs 55-250, if Calsgberg made lenses they would probably have made this one lol

I have the tamron and love it, however if you want a bit more reach the sigma 17-70 might be worth considering too. Its a bit faster than the 15-85.

From experience, when i had my 40D, i had a sigma 10-20 and a 24-105 F4/L, i loved the 24-105L and i found it was a great walkabout lens and was was always on my body. I found it quite comfortable.

I recently bought a 60D to get back into photography, and the first 2 lenses i have bought for it are a sigma 10-20 and i've got a 24-105 being delivered tomorrow.
 
Just an update - in the end I went for a 15-85mm. Good choice. I use all three lenses a lot, constantly swapping between them. 15-85mm is great general walkabout choice.
