Want to buy a new carry around lens.

Well in actual fact I want to buy several new lenses,

My first idea was to replace my 18-55 to a 18-200 so I have a larger zoom available to me without changing lenses.

I also want a 24mm f1.4/8 I used this lens when shooting the northern lights and it was fantastic.

Also maybe a 50mm 1.8

What are your thoughts on this and any recommendations?
 
I found my old 28-135IS lens was a great size for me for general walk about. Your 18-55 is small enough to fit in a bag / pocket if you needed the wider angle shot.

Obviously budget plays a major part also and I think Ian (Kerso) on here is around £200 new for this lens.

Not had a chance to have a go with the 18-200, but am dubious at a superzoom lens, you are going to have some compromise on quality etc. Personally I wouldn't buy a superzoom.

Assuming the camera has an EF fitting, the EF lenses will work on film or any Canon digital. EF-S only work on canon crop digital sensor cameras.
 
Correct but remember to apply a magnification factor of 1.6 for your smaller 1000d sensor. This is why your crop sensor 18-55 is equivalent to the old 35mm(Full Frame) 28-80 kit zooms. The 28 - 135 mentioned would then equate to

28x1.6 = 44.8 to 135x1.6 = 216

so thats a healthy zoom range of 50-215 for all intents and purposes and as andyred said the 18-55 in a pocket for the odd wider shot if needed.
I have however just bought an 18-135 on these forums yesterday to replace my 28-135 on my 500d (my gripped 50D and 17-55 f2.8 is not a walkabout outfit :gag:) so it will be interesting to see which performs better. The 28-135 will definitely benefit from build quality, full time manual focus and USM but the 18-135 will give me that extra 10mm at the wide end for a walkabout lens.

As a walkaround lens on a cropped sensor camera I would say 24mm, unless your type of photography needs the zoom, however I prefer my walkaround lens to be wide and fast!
