Hi everyone, my first post.

I’m looking for a camera but not having much luck in my price range, can anyone help please.

The camera must be able to take a polarizing filter.

I would like to spend between £300 and £350 but could just about stretch to £400.

I want to get a camera, polarizing filter, at least 1G memory card, case and ideally a tripod as well, but this could wait.

Any advice gratefully received.

It's the lens that will take the filter.

What do you want to shoot?

Best advice go to the shops and hold different combinations. Buy the one that feels best within your budget.

Welcome to TP:)

Thanks for the quick reply.

I am going to mainly be taking pictures of cars and wish to reduce reflection, the reason for the filter.

I am aware the filter goes on the lens but can’t find a camera with a lens that takes filters along with the other things I need within my budget.

Also it is also quite hard to tell which cameras do take filters from the web sites I have tried.

It's going to have to be an SLR-type camera so you can observe the effect the polariser is having on the image as you adjust it.
Have you considered buying 2nd-hand or does it have to be new?
Buying 2nd hand opens up considerably the number of options available to you and you'll be able to get a very decent camera and lens for the price you mention...

Cameras that were £1500 2 years ago are within your budget now and are not significantly inferior than many of the new cameras sold today - especially not at your price-point, more so when you consider that you're doing (static, I assume) car-photography and some of the more recent innovations will be of limited use to you.

Welcome to the group

As others have already said its the lens that takes a filter not the camera so Iwould suggest you also take into account the cost of lenses and their filters.. Also a 1gig memory card won't hold many pictures if your going to shoot in the RAW format, I would suggest a minimum 4gig card. Spare batteries need to be taken into consideration as well so do a price check.
Don't limit yourself to thinking about one subject, you will find many occassions when the camera can be used.

Setting up for the first time with camera gear just isn't cheap, nor is it to expand the equipment if your going down the DSLR route. This is why many stay with compact cameras.

If you mean by "compact" something you carry in your pocket and point and shoot then no. However I’m not exactly sure of the difference between compact, SLR and a word I’ve just come across "crossover".

If a compact is any camera that comes complete with a lens you can’t change then one of these that takes a polarizer would be fine.

Although if I cant observe the effect of the polarizer without going SLR then second-hand may be the only way to go.

I think you can get a new Nikon D5000 within your budget with a mid-range zoom lens if you shop around.

But you'd also be able to find a 2-year old Professional-spec camera if you buy 2nd hand...
The D5000 would do everything you're talking about easily.
The Canon equivalent would also do - I'm just not as familiar with those as I am the Nikon model, which I've had the opprtunity to inspect up close and would be happy to recommend.

I've managed to find this, Slightly over budget and no tripod. Any comments welcome.

Sony Alpha 230 18-55mm Kit, polarizer, case and 2G memory for £413.

D5000 seams to be around £500 without polarizer, case and memory.

BE VERY CAREFUL of these offers - I just tried to order 4 Micro SD cards at 0.48 per pence each.

The order was for 1.92 but I was going to be charged £18.00 FOR P&P!

4 Micro SD cards can go into a small envelope!

And naturally the £18.00 P&P brought the cost of the cards to about £4.80 - the normal cost of a 2gb Micro SD card.

I would advise anyone to check p&p but i do that naturally when ever i buy should have thought about putting that in the first post sorry but there are some deals to be had :) i only paid 40p for the tripod and 2.95 postage :)

So do I but in that case the P&P wasn't quoted until the final stage of checkout.

Luckily I didn't press the final button but I could have easily done.

I'll keep looking out for the REAL deals though.

EDIT: The p&p WAS quoted with the price of the item - I just didn't notice it - DOH!
