Hi,
I am trying to set up a website, I bought a template from 3templates but realised that I can't access it on my iphone which means others can't either and this is a big no-no. :bang:
Unfortunately I have no time on my hands at the moment to learn java and know a little bit of using dreamweaver but not enough to create an all singing and dancing website.
I wanted something simple to display my photos and with a little description about me. Photography isn't my main profession but wanted a website to showcase my photos.

So can anyone recommend a good place to get a template or someone to create a website (can't afford the odds so it has to be cheap and cheerful hence the template option)

Thanks
Nad

Wordpress is always a good option, great themes available and cheap too!

Isn't wordpress, like a blog website? I didn't want a blog...just wanted something simple with photos on majority of the screen.

I will check out photoium

This is my website at the moment www.photographydoctor.co.uk I really wanted something similar to it, maybe have the photos bigger. It must be available for phone users. Its very much in the editing phase at the moment ;)

I really am not a fan of wordpress or the basic website designs..i love some of the users websites on this forum

what do your webstats say in terms of % phone usage (open question to all with a website)

its alot more then that - you can use it as a full CMS with static and blog pages,

I really like the wix templates but these are flash based, is there anything similar that is not. I have been looking through wordpress, photoium and joomla and I am not a great fan personally. Only because I hate to write thousands and thousands of words. I also looked at CMD websites and you have to pay $100 for hosting. I already have host website

I really like the templates from www.bigblackbag.com but unfortunately you have to pay a monthly fee, are they any websites that have templates like this and you can pay a one off fee?

you got a template the is flash, apple will never support flash so you need none flash site
was there an option for the same site but html based??

There was no html equivalent with the folder that I downloaded from their link even though there is a html folder (bizzare) filled with php files and swf files.

Can you recommend a non flash site place where I can get a template or is there a way of converting my flash website to a non-flash one? I really do like the layout I have at the moment

At the moment you have a flash site. The issue is your phone doenst render flash properly

They used flash because of the way it deals with animating your images

the alternative is DHTML

There isnt a way of directly converting flash to DHTML

You have some choices. I asked earler "from the webstats, how many are using a phone to view your site" say this is 1% (taking YOU out of the equation) are you prepared to invest in re-doing your site for a very small minority?

If you fee it is worth the investment, you can get your site to "SNIFF" what the end user has, and if the browser does not support flash, you can offer alternative content. In otherwords you dont need to ditch what yoou have, just provide alternative content for non-flash sites (or computers/phones with a portrait profile screen)

This is the issue with free or inexpensive templates - they look good to an extent, but they dont generally offer alternatives when differing browsers have rendering issues

joomla / wordpress are red-herrings. you have a fundamental issue here - are you prepared to ditch a nice looking template, just because the smallest minority, cant see your site on a phone? forget websites for a second. look at your phone.... in what format, will a single image need to be in so it can be totally appreciated on your phone? how does that differ to your wide-screen desktop PC/MAC?

the point I am making is that you may need to serve the widescreen PC totally different content than you serve a portrait orientation phone

And here are the OS stats from my site:

1. Windows - 3282 - 75.40%
2. Macintosh - 1013 - 23.22%
3. Linux - 41 - 0.92%
4. iPhone - 20 - 0.46%

In other words, if I am going to appease anyone other then a windows user, it will be a MAC user, then a Linux user, and then as a very last resort a IPhone user. If my site had an issue on a phone, I would be half inclined to leave a message suggesting that to view the site properly, and to appreciate the photography, they use the phone as a phone, and visited the site on a PC - click here to send yourself an e-mail home with the link...

However 4.3% of the browsers used to view my site dont have flash. That's 10 times more that those using a phone. which is why i chose DHTML as the platform of choice..

I figure that 4.3%-0.46% = the number of machines on corporate networks where flash is intentionally disabled. And that's a market of users that inst worth ignoring

You are absolutely right, I don't have time to create a different website for that small percentage even though I would like to. Does anyone know if I can put up a link somewhere for non-flash users. Was going to create something quick and simple in iWeb. Worked quite a bit on the photographydoctor.co.uk today and will soon be asking everyone for their input. Many thanks everyone for your help

I agree to a point - it all comes down the time and effort the OP wants to put into it. It's not difficult to make a wordpress template render perfectly for most screens and media but it does take a little time and expertise. Its not the cms system that causes sites to render inconsistently, more the features and functionality available on many cheap templates.

As Richard mentioned, you might just be better to use your existing template and have a decent flickr account to display your photography, I see this being used more and more these days for a cheap option, especially if photography isn't your main source of income.
