Want to try macro"..

Hi Guys,

I would like to have a go at some macro shots with my D7000.
I don't have a macro lens, only a 50mm 1:8 and the 18-200 3:5-5:6 nikkor lenses.
Would I be better using a reversing ring or an extender? And which lens should I use them on?
I also have an old olympus 50mm manual lens in the loft somewhere that I could use as well.
I do plan on having a true macro lens in the future, once I've saved up some cash.

Cheapest is the reversing ring, I've never tried it though so can't speak for how easy / difficult focussing is etc.. I have seen some very impressive results.
You could try extension tubes, they have the advantage of being usable with a macro lens when you get one in the future. The depth of field can be very narrow though and lighting takes a hit as well, but don't let that concern you too much. I used to use a set but haven't ahd them out this year yet.
Another option would be something like a raynox 250 macro conversion lens that attaches to the front of a normal lens.

Get a set of extension tubes
no need for the expensive set just a tenner
probably better with your big zoom, although some practice with the 50mm would be good.

Usually you get three rings, I usually have all three, but you can unscrew them to reduce the magnification.

Also you may need the flash, or flash gun - but experiment first...

Enjoy macro, its frustrating but vey rewarding

I've not used the raynox, but it does get very good reviews, around 40 ukp or so...


Macro lens really depend on what you are taking pictures of, nervious animals/insects... or stationary things.
If you have the option, borrow the lenses to see which you get on with working distance and weight.
105mm macro is good. 90mm tamron, 105 sigma, 150 sigma and 180 sigma (bigger and heavier and more expensive as you go a bit longer..?)

Thanks for the comments guys. I think I'll try the extension tubes. Where can I get them for £10? As long as they're for nikon they'll work I take it?
I'm thinking the aperture may be an issue as I can't change it.
Can I use my olympus lens with extension tubes on my nikon camera?

However they are the really basic, just tubes with screw threads. Think on ebay you can pick them up cheap.
Probably something like this e bay link might do the trick. And if not, you haven't wasted too much money.

Anything more expensive I'd see if you can use first, ie experiment in a shop (also check any used camera stores near you, see if they have any to try). Just bring a coin or something small with you to try in-store...

The cheapest option is the rings etc, if you're looking at a lens, We've the Sigma 50mm macro lens and for what we are after, it works a treat and we get very good results with it.

If you're shooting bugs and the like, you'll need to go 100mm as a minimum though.
