Ok so I currently have the Nikon D90 and while its a great camera I am having the serious upgrade itch. I currently shoot a lot of studio family portraits and fashion stuff and it will be used 90% of the time for this.

So here is the dilemma. I have, at a push around a grand to spend. At the moment I only have the 18-105 kits lens and have been thinking that image quality is paramount to me now above all else, which meand ditching the kits lens right?

I am looking at either the D7000 or the new 7100. I could just about stretch to the D7100 and keep my kits lens attached or as the 7000 will drop radically pretty soon, get that and a decent lens upgrade. But I am wanting something that will last a good few years and although the 7000 is a good upgrade to the D90 I cant help but feel it will be a bit of a dinosaur in the next couple of years and the 16 megapixels will be a bit outdated rather soon.

So 7100 with kit lens or 7000 and good zoom lens upgrade? My head hurts and don't know what to do for the best. I am looking at the camera to last a good 4 years or so.

Having just bought the D7000 myself I must say I don't think it will be the Dinosaur you think in a few years and its now available as a body for £600 ish the D71000 is up at over £1000. Buy the D7000 sell your kit lens and buy an uber lens :)
 
I wouldn't upgrade from d90 to a d7000 you will likely be disappointed if the upgrade is purely for image quality. Much more important is replacing the rather average 18-105 for something better and faster with a constant f2.8.

i would upgrade your lens first. getting a good lens could make a difference with your d90. the d7000 is a great camera but good glass is needed to make it really sing. if you wait a while and save a bit more you could get a d7000 or d7100 after the price drops in a few months and get a better lens to use now while you wait.

Invest your funds in good glass now. Then, in the future, you can upgrade the body to get the best out of your glass.
 
Glass first, but you won't be disappointed with the D7000.
Don't get hung up on the MP war either, 12mp is enough for most folk & 16mp is ample.
 
I posted a very similar thread last week. I have a D90 and the same lens but would like to move to FF in the next year. I was looking to gauge whether the best next step for me was to buy a D800 or a Nikon 24-70 2.8G lens first, with the other further down the line. It was a very interesting debate with lots of different opinions but in the end I went for the lens which I purchased over the weekend. I can honestly say it was a fantastic choice. With the new lens the D90 is like a different camera. Yes I still plan to improve my body in the future but I have no doubts that the lens upgrade was a great decision to make and to be honest I'm enjoying it on the D90 at the moment.
 
I agree with the glass first.

If you are shooting indoors and fashion then chances are you don't really need the f2.8. What about primes?

For portraits then the 85mm f1.8g would be a good choice. Actually you are on crop so maybe the 50mm f1.8g would be a better bet if you don't already have it. I love my 50mm. It's so sharp I could cut my finger on it! :lol:
 
Great, thanks everyone for your opinions.

Think some decent glass first then. I mainly shoot children, normally a few at a time running around so would prefer a decent zoom for ease rather than prime. I know I would be losing optical quality but for the sake of my knees I am happy to sacrifice that a bit rather than chase them. Can anyone recommend a good performing glass around the 20-70 zoom range? Not top end as would like to upgrade the body too at some point but one that performs well in the IQ department. Also would it still fit the D7100 if I upgraded to that in the future?

Sorry but nothing in the Nikon range with a fast aperture come cheap,when you say 20-70mm range is that taking the crop factor into it :)
 
Not the fastest zoom, but still excellent, is the 16-85mm.
 
Glass has to be the answer .. bodies come and go ,, thou good glass will stay for you forever

feel a song coming on haha :)
