folks, I have agreed to buy a brand new Nikon D4s from this forum from a member on here. I'm picking it up next week. As my insurance is due I got the serial number and added to to my insurance starting next week. I also decided that as the camera was delivered 20 days ago that I should register it before the 30 days are up to get the 2year warranty. When I went to register it then it's says it's already registered and talking to James I know he didn't register it so how come its registered? It came from John Lewis and James was the first owner as its brand new. I have asked Nikon but as yet they haven't got back to me to tell me if the warranty can be transferred to me or not. I could ask James if there was an issue to go through the warranty however he hasn't registered it in his name. So can I still get it registered for the 2 year warranty in my name? How can it already be registered?

You can ask Nikon to contact the registered owner to remover the camera from his registered account and you can then register it on your own Nikon account, However, the warranty is with the first registered owner

Cheers Gary. So how does this go when James who got it straight from John Lewis hadnt registered it in his name?
Hes probably bought a customer return which has found its way back nto the shelf, it happens, it happened with me and a Canon 1DMKIII, did he check the shutter count was zero.

Or potentially someone has registered the wrong serial number from their camera, easy to get one digit wrong i suppose, just like dialling a wrong number and provided the umber that person registers isnt already registered then Nikon will allow its registration

Do you have the original purchase receipt from James, if so them regardless of what, the warranty is with James and he only needs the receipt to gain warranty service

It could also be that someone has mistyped their own serial number and come up with this one. The text is quite small so it is easy to think it says, for example, 8 instead of 6 or 0.

I believe John Lewis receipt are transferable to the new owner :)
I dont think i would be going though John Lewis though as i think it would be Nikon or do i go to John Lewis who would send to Nikon themselves. Would be good to get it sorted before i go pick up the camera.

I must be missing something here, if you bought the camera as new from someone on here , its not new and the Warranty isn't transferable as it vest with the original purchaser and Nikon warranty's aren't transferrable

The camera is new and unused- still in the box. Im buying it as such. My plan was to register it for the 2 year warranty however it seems the camera is already registered but not by James who got it from John Lewis, so neither of us know who its registered to at the moment. With the receipt im hoping i can go through James in the unlijely event of a warranty claim being required.

If this was PC World, instead of John Lewis, I would suspect that it was previously sold, returned to shop and sold again as new.

John Lewis give you a 2 year guarantee on Electronics and Electricals anyway so you don't need to worry about registering in time for Nikon's own warranty. Plus, warranties are always with the supplier first and not the manufacturer direct, although some manufacturers do accept direct contact rather than going through the supplier first.

Thats even better then as James is leaving the original receipt in the box. Thanks folks.

And from personal experience with John Lewis - if you do have any issues they are very helpful.

Mother in laws PC went down when it was 18 months old, returned it to them, no issues whatsoever, they sent it away and new HDD installed within a week. Phone call to say it's back straight away, collected and it's been perfect since ...

I do and have recommended them for electricals etc many times...

If you sell it and the buyer wants to transfer the registration with Nikon to themselves, how can they do that?
How could you convince the buyer that it is 'one owner' ... surely better for James to return the camera as 'already registered' and get one that you both know is definitely brand new.
It may appear to be 'new in the box' but as Nikon boxes aren't sealed who knows its history?

Thats why i said it might be a customer return

Just an update: Nikon mailed me today to say that Domestic & General has a customer who registered the camera in their name and gave me the detail of D&G number to call them. I text James and he talked to D&G and it seems it was registered to James by D&G. So it is a new camera registered to James who is happy to act as a go between if a warranty claim should happen. Also as it was from John Lewis i will get the receipt in the box and their warranty is transferrable to the holder of the receipt then im fully covered and the sale will go ahead on Fri.
