Are there any other reputable dealers that do the 3 sigma warranty other than clifton cameras? jessops only seem to have 1 year which surprised me

Hi Peter

I think the Sigma 3 year warranty is provided by Sigma for a UK purchased lens...

Would have thought Jessops lenses would have qualified

so would i be right in thinking that all the other sellers with 1 year warranties wont be covered by the sigma warranty? say if you bought from digirev, procamerashop etc, i'm a bit dubious about getting one with just a 1 year warranty. It seems only clifton seem to have the 3 year

Extended warranties are a rip-off. You are covered under EU consumer law for up to two years on new electrical goods in some cases. Unless the warranty only kicks in when the statutory one runs out -which it won't do - you are paying for something you already have. These warranties pay good commission to salespeople. This is their sole purpose.

That's all well and good except for two things:
1. Lenses are optical devices and not electrical goods (according to HMRC)
2. The Sigma 3 year warranty is free

OTOH, I do agree that most extended warranties for electrical goods aren't worth what they cost. Under normal circumstances it would be reasonable to expect (statistically speaking) that an item will fail either very soon after purchase or way past the end of even the extended warranty - the bathtub curve :)

If you want a shop, use the map. If you are happy with the internet, then click the link on the right to get all the internet stores. Each one will be an official sigma retailer and therefore qualify you for the warranty.

You can of course contact Sigma as well and ask, I have always found their staff very helpful when I phone them.

Fair enough - but the EU warranty doesn't just cover electrical goods:

The seller is liable for the proper performance of your purchase for a period of at least 2 years. If the purchased item becomes defective within 6 months or if, within this period, the performance of the purchased item is not what you might reasonably expect of it, it is assumed that the lack of conformity already existed at the time of purchase. This does not apply, if the seller can prove that the defect is your own fault. If the defect becomes apparent between 6 and 24 months after purchase, it is your responsibility to show that the defect or fault already existed at the time you purchased the item. You are entitled to repair or replacement of your purchase free of charge, if a defect becomes apparent through no fault of your own within a period of 2 years. Repair or replacement must take place within a reasonable period and without any serious inconvenience to you.

I understood that a lens that will only operate when you run an electric current through it was classed as 'electrical goods' and that a fully manual lens came under a different category.

Happy to be corrected on this.

Hi Jon,

The problem is that a camera lens does it's job (i.e. focussing light) whether it has current passing through it or not so HMRC classify them all with the same tarriff number. There are different tarriffs for certain non-camera lenses such as those for medical devices, spectacles, etc.

It may not be logical ... but that's civil servants for you :D

*Sigh*. Why am I not amazed? :shake:

Have a look on camerapricebuster.co.uk

they list retailers who import via the offical UK importer and so should provide the 3 year warranty

It's worth remembering that you have to register the lens online within (I think) 30 days of purchase to get the extended warranty.

Does anyone have any info of successful claims brought using this scheme?
