Was it the Camera or me?

Hi All,

I am coming back to photography after several years of nothing more than holiday pics with a press and shoot digital.

I was big into 35mm many years ago and read / practiced everything I could back then so whilst nothing more than a keen amateur its fair to say I once took some good shots.

Anyway, coming back t photography the decision is made I want to build up a dslr kit so I have been into a couple of local dealers and fondled their kit so to speak.

Now was it just me given that I now wear glasses for reading or was it the cameras but I just felt the images showing on the viewing screens were not as clean or sharp as I have seen from even my panasonic lummox point and shoot kit.

Granted I only looked at Nikon and Canon but the 550d for example just looked rubbish on screen.

Was this just down to poor quality screen resolution that will not be an issue when the images are later downloaded to something like my Macbook with a decent resolution screen.

Am I looking in the wrong price range with the 550d, do i need something better to get the real crisp images i want?

M.

The 550D (or any modern DSLR) will have no trouble taking sharp pictures, you pay more for build and other capabilities as you progress up the hierarchy....anyway I am surprised at your comment as the 550D has a very nice latest tech screen as far as I am aware.

Somebody might have been playing with the Picture Styles, which affect the LCD image. Not that it necessarily has much bearing on the quality of the final ouput anyway.

No compact can hold a candle to a DSLR on any aspect of image quality. Buy with confidence on that score

Did you zoom into the picture review on the screen? Many times, a photograph, when stuffed into the small area that is the screen, looks rather fuzzy. Zooming in as far as you can go should give you a good idea of its sharpness (or otherwise). Apologies if you did that anyway. I find that, even having viewed zoomed fully in on the camera, the pics still look a lot sharper on the computer.

The 550d has one of the highest resolution screens going and is superb. I had a 550d but found that the images were anything but crisp! This was down to a faulty camera! I sent it back and bought a used 40d which is great...heavy but great!

The screen is just there for a quick visual confirmation of your images - I never quite know why so many people worry about the quality - as long as it's big and bright enough to view the image and all the information...

Oh Dear, I knew I shouldn’t have listened to the advice on the forum. I decided to go back and try a few more cameras for feel, build quality, clear viewfinder / screen etc etc.

You know where this is going don’t you, yes I came out with an EOS 7D and the EFS 15-85 I

It just feels right in my hands... With spare battery, super fast 8GB CF Card, the obligatory protection in the form of a UV filter, a lower bag and £30 for a 3 year warranty I am £1800 the poorer but what the hell, I am happy.

Thanks for the advice in this thread and elsewhere guys and gals.

Mark.
