Washing Your Car!

Hi mate I have never got caught with custom charges , and yes the same way cut a small strip of electrical tape just wide enough for around the lens and 1 wrap should hold it extremely tight in place.
Make sure you set car mode and loop 3-5 mins in menu and your good to go.

PS: Upload some images would be good after your all set up and with the nice weather looming it's good timing.

Took delivery of my new toy last Thursday. Straight from the dealer with a scuff on the boot lid and swirls all over the bonnet and boot :( Makes me wonder who the dealers use to prep new cars.

Still, on the bright side, it'll get a full machine polish to sort it and it's still fun to drive :)

What is it 320D and I personally don't like dark or black alloys but they suit the car.

I would take it to a professional detailer if you want a proper job done mate anything from £200-£400 depending on what needs doing.

Agree, I just take my BMW to those very nice Polish people just out of town. Great service and full valet for a tenner !

There are some not so nice criminal polish people also remember, and you could be funding crimes. No disrespect but if you think they offer a " Great Service " then you haven't a clue because they don't give a toss what or how they clean your car as long as your handing them money at the end of what I have always found a sloppy job.

There are a lot of could be, might be and maybe's in this world. You may have been a recipient of a 'sloppy job' but your experience differs to mine.

Organised crime and clueless - Don't even go down that road matey !

NON of the Polish Car Washes in my area know how to wash a car as they ALWAYS use harsh chemicals ( TFR ) Acid Wheel cleaner to get the job done as quick as possible with the least amount of work. Ask them about the 2 bucket method !.

In regards Organised crime I can 100% say our Polish car washes is very organised and not in a nice way.

I would prefer to do it myself when I brought my classic Mini new in 1999 the first thing I did was spend a weekend cleaning it properly the same when we collected our MINI Countryman from a MINI dealer both were meant of have been fully valeted by professionals

I have zero experience with machine polishing and wouldn't trust myself especially on an expensive car.

I never said it was where you took your car , I said "some" and in this case I was referring to "my" local polish car wash. I can say every polish car wash I have ever been always use TFR and Acid on the wheels and not saying your local polish car wash does have I have never been but I would bet my right kidney they do.

If your happy with your local polish car wash then that's all that matters really, but I would never use them same as my mates who also have nice cars. I always use a local car wash run by a local lad , he knows his stuff and I always get a good Wash & Dry for a fiver, 2 bucket method neutral PH shampoos and always uses a brush to get into the alloy wheels and behind.

After some quick advice if you don't mind guys.....

My car came back from a rebuild/repaint last year & I've not even polished it yet!! A mate talked me into some Meguiars Gold Class as he said it's good with darker/deeper colours but I've not had the chance to use it. Is it a simple case of apply as instructed? I obviously want to do it properly but to be completely honest, I've never owned a car with a good enough paint finish to ever get into it like most of you lot sound like you are!!

You don't really apply polish, applying polish doesn't do anything as such.....

If it had a respray then I would expect the paint is perfect and unless you have been washing it with a dirty mitt then there is no need to polish. What you need is a wash and a wax.....unless you mean wax?

You only polish cars when it has scratch marks.

Yeah I probably do mean more of a wax. I've literally not done anything with it except a quick wash/wipe over really. One I didn't think it needed much & two I wasn't sure what to do, what it needed, what best to use etc

You should only need a good wash, clay bar, then wax.

Meguiar Gold Class SHAMPOO
Bilt hamber clay bar
Collinite insulator wax
Sonax wheel cleaner
PERL - for black plastic trims

That should do nicely.

Other bits -

2 buckets
wash mitt (not sponge)
microfibre towels
A few brushes

Picked a couple up of the Kent drying towels today - very large and thick :)

Looking forward to trying them out this weekend...

I also bought 2 & I found using 1 is enough to dry the car, then I use the other for buffing off the wax later. (got to say I still use the leather on the windows afterwards though)

Excellent. Thanks for the input.

The wheels are wet sprayed, lacquered steels & there's chrome not plastic trim but the rest is spot on :)

I don't use it often & it feels like I drive it, put it away, drive it, put it away..... I feel guilty not giving it some TLC :(

Just a quick pic of the Git1.

Nice Raymond and you can take it out and take on your holidays which is another bonus :)

I'm actually planning to get a few more for mounting them outside the car when hopefully I can do the North Coast 500 road trip next spring.

I purchased a small 3M mount which keeps it quite high up Ray as shown Below

If you could remember where you got this one that would be great, the one I got isn't get great and still longer than i want.

I've also encountered a different problem for the rear window, as mine is a hatch back, there needs to be more slack than normal because when I open the boot, it pulls the cable. That means it can't be as tidy as if it was fixed like in a saloon. Bummer.

I have a feeling it was a Genuine Git one from www.gitup.com and I have sent for another and should be with me in the next few days so I will let you know if its the same as I have already.

Hi Raymond, I can now confirm the mount you are looking for was purchased from GitUp although not shown on their website , if you Email them and ask I am sure that they can sort you out with one or 2 . I paid $5 including postage.

Thanks! I'll email them and attach your photo as reference! I did look through on their site and didn't see it.

Are these GIT1 cameras on par with the good ole GoPro? Or as good enough should I say considering the obvious cost difference.

I was thinking of one for the Escort for the odd days out/car meets/track days etc

Nice! I've been looking at getting one.

What mileage do you get with your commute? how long is your commute and how much of motorway does it include, if any?

My daily commute is 11m to and 11m from work, mainly dual carriageways, no motorways. The electric range is about 22m but it's best to let the car decide on when to switch the engine on and off. I haven't been constantly checking the mpg, but when I did it was about 42mpg.

Better get your order in now if you want one, I've heard that those placing orders now are being quoted early 2017 for delivery.

Send your figures in then. HJ's figures are based on real world experiences from an assortment of drivers so are as accurate as possible.

I have and the range of mpg for the ST TDCi hasn't changed, still reads 5mpg lower than I used to average and that was only 2mpg more than I averaged if the car was driven hard all the time.
I can only assume too many cars with brakes binding or tyre pressures too low.

Or that the average ST TDCi driver drives like a twunt more than you!

If by that you mean slower, you'd be right, they invariably do.
You don't necessarily have to be driving like a twunt, just because you drive fast.

Well, popped out this afternoon to wash the car - bit of a break in the hot sun shine with a little cloud cover, so went for it...

Half way through washing it and the sun came back out and things got a little warm again, rinsed off a couple of times, ran round with the drying towel - what do know, worked a treat, dead easy to use and the car dried off and very shiney with no water marks etc

Got to say, I'm a convert (y)

I always use a Microfiber cloth to dry the car when I do wash it myself ..lol
