had a bash at doing some water droplets yesturday, i had a couple that were not to bad, but overall they all came out slightly soft, does anybody have any advice to help me make them sharper?????? im using a 400d with 430ex flashgun and i also use another flash firing as a slave, any help would be great.... Do i need to use lamps at either side of the drops or not or will the light from the flash be enough??????????:shrug:

please help :help:

Hi Andy, did you start at 1/250, 50mm and 200 iso?

a tripod is pretty well essential too.

infact take a photo of your set up, so we can have a peek :)

Try lowering the water temperature :) - if it goes below 0 degrees C, that should cure the "softness"!

post an example for us to look at

I agree with the others! why not post an example shot? also you don't say what settings your using for the flash? it really needs to be set as fast as possible to freeze the moment..HTH

Ok, i had a go at this a couple of months back, so here's a bit of info on what i did.

Equipment:

40D

Speedlite 430EX

Shutter release cable

Redsnapper Tripod

Sigma 18-200mm

Kenko Extension Tubes

Flourescent coloured A4 paper

Camera settings were:

ISO 100

Aperture f11

Shutter speed 1/250

the set-up:

Method:

i used manual focus, laid a wooden spoon across the centre of the bowl to use as a focus point then adjusted MF accordingly untill i had the best focus, the magnification feature in live view also helped me to get the best focus.

I Dropped the water using a turkey baster!!, not the best solution!! Another way to do it is, use an old 1/2 litre coke bottle, make a pin hole in the base & the neck, fill it with water and put the lid back on, this will give you a steady flow of water drops.
