Water reflection and long exposure...

......call me stupid but....if I wanted a reflection of a bridge in a lake for eg, and it was slightly windy there would be ripples, soooooooo............If I wanted it to look smooth can you do this...

do a long exposure (with nd filters if day etc) and would that make it look smoother?

my reason thinking this is it would capture the ripples at their highest all over and would smooth it out

does this make sense?

Have only managed to get the reflections once, and that night the river was still as still could be, don't think you will get reflection in long exposures with rippled water.
 
Bear in mind that you also get every bit reflected at mid ripple, at at bottom ripple too. Nothing you can do about it really, the reflection will just look blurred. Can be a cool effect though.
