Am I better to use shutter priority or manual ,what filters give the best results when trying to shoot waterfalls ?

I have made a few attempts with 18-105 on my d90 but not really impressed with the results !:'(

any help greatly appreciated...
 
you need to shoot in manual mode.

lowest ISO, stop down your aperture to start off with and it will give you roughly what shutter speed you got, then if is still too fast then add filter (ND Filter) to make the shutter speed slow.
 
Depends on whether you are looking to get the milky water effect or not. If the former then you need to slow the shutter speed down by using an ND filter and use a tripod. I would use Aperture priority mode at around f11 regardless.
 
yes I have been trying to get the milky water effect think i need to get a nd ...as water was always blown .....

Bang on, 1-2 stops of lights blocked and will cut out a bit of glare as well.
 
One of other thing that hasn't been mentioned is you could just shoot the waterfall in low light to slow your shutter down.
 
Whether you need an ND filter or not depends on lots of things, the lighting, the speed of the water, the smallest aperture you want to use, if you have a tripod or support for the camera, the effect you are after and so on.

i use 2-3 stop ND to shoot water or sometimes throw a 10 stop to mess around with, plenty of slow shutter speed to play with.
