Watermark or Not

Just created a new website, and have not watermarked my images, but am not sure whether to do so or not.

I know that even with a watermark, the image can still be downloaded and PP'd to remove the mark, but just wanted people's thoughts on whether they watermark their images or not....
 
MD - I've been thinking about it for the last few days.......and i hate it when a watermark ruins the whole look of the image and distracts the eye.....

My images are nothing special by any means, but i would hate for someone to rip them off the site and use them! :(

I noticed that thread, which geared me towards putting this poll up! ;)

When and its only when I give someone images for facebook .. I put a copyright on my images I make " try to make " it so the copyright is there not quite in the way but there to be noticed.

Would you like an example ?

I don't yet. but never thought 600px(on longest side) was big enough to warrant a watermark...

After reading the topic linked in here though I am considering it...

People will steal your images whether you watermark them or not - however, with watermark images it opens doors to all sort of opportunities.

From a business/networking perspective I believe it is very worthwhile to watermark your pictures.
 
I don't put a mark across the image, instead a copyright logo and name bottom right/left of the image in either white or black so that it is clear that the image is subject to copyright. I know this doesn't stop someone cropping the bottom of the image of but I prefer that than having watermarks. Don't get me wrong that I dont value my image. It's just sad that you have to take the precautions because theres thieves out there :(
 
I don't watermark. I want people to go to my site to view my pics at their best, and so do not put a watermark on that will take away from them in any way. Art directors/photo editors I have spoke to say they don't like them on sites, and if you look at high end Pro's hardly any of them have any watermarks on them. It will probably be diff for people taking family portraits/events etc. where they make their money from print sales, but for what I do, I don't think it is worth it.

I have right click disabled on my images, and accept that if someone wants my image, then they will probably get it anyway, as I would not put a watermark on to distract form the image in any major way. Obv. if I find out it is a site without my permission, it's all guns blazing.

I'm inclined to agree with this.

Pro's tend not to watermark thier stuff, which you can right click and download if you wished.

If someone is going to steal your images then they are going to steal them, water mark or not.

I want to show my work which is images not text, so i dont put it on.
 
Regarding a watermark, is it better to put your name on each photo in say, the bottom left corner so people know it is yours?

I see lots of pics with watermaks right scross the middle of a pic, very faint.

Also, is it really easy to setup a watermark with Lightroom 3?
 
If someone were to steal one of my images I'd be rather chuffed. :lol: Sort of a back handed compliment. Saying that though, if I ever found one in a magazine (unlikely) I'd pursue it. I dont watermark images although I used to.
 
I've watermarked some, and left alone others. In truth, I don't really like the look of watermarks because, as was said above, it's our "art" and so we want it viewed at it's best. It is sadly a fact of life that, regardless of precautions taken, people will be able to steal your work if they so wish - print screens, cropping, cloning etc. - but I don't want the integrity of my images damaged by a watermark. I'd actually like to remove the photos on my Flickr now with watermarks and replace them with the originals but I don't want to lose the faves, comments and views!

I hear all the comments, I've had a few directed at me asking/telling me not to, but at the end of the day you have to respect my views. What I have done is try to make my watermark compliment my images. If it works, great, if not, so what? Genuinely interested people will contact me and have the opportunity to see a non-watermarked version.

If watermarking isn't for you then fine, good luck to you too. :thumbs:
 
I always watermark mine and loads of people use them (with watermark) on Facebook etc. I would love to get the "no right click" working on my website but even though i add the coding to the "body" of my web page it doesn't seem to work. If I conquered this problem all future pics would be without the watermark.

Most of my photos are sports related and it is the kids who tag their own photos. Not too much of a problem but i would like to stop it

The right click is so easy to overcome it's next to worthless. The reality is all anyone can do is either accept image copyright infringment and not bother, or watermark in the hope it cuts it down.

My own reason for watermarking is about more than preventing infringments, it's so at least my name gets out there too hopefully.
 
Images in my portfolio galleries are not watermarked but all images in client galleries, facebook and on my blog are.

Has to be the onload portion of the header - you can also use it to intercept Print Screen (or/and CTRL PRINT SCREEN) key assuming document is active.
 
I always watermark my images, they are not worth stealing but i still do it.

I stick my watermark right across the screen, i have it on about 5% opacity, or until your able to see it.. all different sizes, preferably on the hardest place to remove.
