Hi guys,

hoping you can help me with a problem I'm having. I'm trying to backup some photos as I do every month but my Western Digital HDD (usb powered) won't copy all of my files. I copies some of the edited tifs and jpgs but missed a lot out and doesn't copy the cr2 files. There is plenty of room on the HDD and when the data is transferring there is no error message, it finishes as it normally would (although much quicker) and when I look for the files most of them aren't there

Just wondering if anyone has come across this before, whether I'm doing something wrong or whether there is a quick fix

No warnings popping up at all?

Are you able to drag over just one CR2 file? Could be one file among the lot that doesn't want to be copied, throwing it all to cock....
 
how are you backing up the files?

are you doing it manually, or you using a script or a utility to do it?

can you copy the files manually using Windows Explorer? (ie, copy/paste between folders)

can you copy the files using the command prompt (the syntax is copy "src" "dest" so copy "c:\source folder\img_3221.cr2" "d:\destination folder")

do you get any errors in the command window?

it's possible that if these tests are failing and if you formatted the drive NTFS on another computer the security settings are screwed up on the drive but there's quite an easy fix you can use:

No error file, just skips the loading process

Just tested it again and it won't copy CR2s or jpgs but it will copy tiffs :thumbsdown::bonk:

I ahve no idea how to do it with software, I'm manually backing it up with Finder on my mac
 
Personally, I'd copy the files to another drive or your desktop then use disk utility to do a full erase on the drive. I've done this before on a drive and it sorted whatever the problem was....
 
Dban boot & nuke (make sure you do the right drive!!!!) single pass always does the trick for me!!
From memory You can mount it (user virtual clone drive) to nuke USB disks, it doesn't have to be run from boot.

Edit although that's on windows and not totally sure how you'd recover the files first. Have you tried a different machine??

You may get a better response from the computer section, might be worth asking a mod to move the thread.

Never heard of a mac only being able to copy some file types before. Just to clarify even if you drag a single cr2 file it won't copy?
 
Ignore my reply Iain, it's all rubbish, i had assumed you were using a Windows based computer, and the problem you described i have seen before, but with a mac, i have no idea.

Just tried that, an hour in the download stopped at 66/124GB transferred

Mrs tried from her windows laptop and it works fine :/

First check out:

Second as you have access to a windows computer then I would give dban a try before condemning it. Just copy all the files onto the windows computer first, or copy them on to another drive via the windows computer:

I used the WD drives and they're the most reliable ones I have found so far.

Or in all seriousness, if you want me to take a look a the drive I am more than happy to
