Hi folks, just read a review on a Canon 400mm 5.6 L lens and one of the points against it was the lack of weather sealing. I don't own any L lenses but had thought that they were all weather sealed as part of being the L range. I was hoping some of you more enlightened chaps/chapettes on here maybe fill me on on which of the L lenses are actually weather sealed (interested in the long primes for birding more than anything else) or if the review just got it wrong.

Tommy.

Some of the L Lenses are only completely weather sealed if you have a filter on the front element.

Full weathersealing is limited to the rotary action zooms (except the 70-200-non IS's), the 50/1.2 , the super telephotos and the MkII T/C's.

The 17-40 isn't fully weather sealed either is it?

According to the lists I have, it's got the highest level....better than the 24-105 and equivalent to the fast long primes.

Oh, cheers for that. I have always been a little cautious of spray etc thinking it wasn't weather sealed.

What list is that bob? can you point us in the direction of it?

Is that the list that refers to the sealing at the camera mount? So those lenses are only sealed there when used with a camera which has the corresponding seal, ie 1D series or 5Dmk2.

They're based on info that I've cut/pasted from various trusted websites including Canon's own an added to my own documents.

Certainly it's all pretty academic if used with a non-weathersealed body. Only the 1srs bodies are fully sealed and xxD and 5D/5DMkII have various degrees on moisture and dust protection.

I was specifically taking about the weather seal between the body and lens, the lenses on that list have the rubber seal to fit with the weather sealing on the 1D. There fore they would not be be weather sealed on a non 1D body.

There's nothing to say that other lenses don't have weather sealing round say the focus rings IS switches etc, that would be interesting to know.
