I was speaking to a chap yesterday with my brother who is an MX photographer.

I said i might go along and watch my brother on saturday and get a few snaps while hes in the paddock

I told him i had a 7D and a 24-105 and he said dont bother its not weather proof you will **** it up with dust ..

Now am i just missing something or is the guy on cucckoo?
 
Just use common sense and judge the weather/atmosphere conditions - it's hardly likely to be very dusty right now. Many people have used non-weather sealed bodies to shoot MX in the past with no issues. Also, the 24-105 does have weather sealing as far as I know...you may find the focal length a bit limiting - the standard 'go to' lens for MX is really a 70-200.
 
i only wanted to come along and watch as i used to ride and i thought that i might get some good uns in the paddock :)
 
Take your gear along.
If it's peeing down with rain you leave your gear in the bag. If the conditions are favourable use your gear.
 
24-105L IS is weathersealed and so to a certain extent is the 7D. Just don't go swimming with them .................
 
Dont take your £1000+ camera outside in anything but a dry sunny day Danny, for the love of God just dont!! :cuckoo:

Blah Blah Blah Codswallop Blah Blah Blah. Take your camera use common sense and have fun. Oh and by the way check out MX ,Rally and Dakar Rally pictures on the net taken with everything from bridge cameras to every SLR known to man and 7Ds as well. :eek: Its a pity the cameras all had to be scrapped at the end of every event though . NOT. The chap you were talking too is probably being a bit sport pro snobby t.b.h. and is just bigging up his gear/profession.

Oh and rugged stormy landscapes are out of bounds for your 7D as well.

Yes, he's talking *****.

I used my XXD cameras at forest stage rallies in summer, dust everywhere and also windy too. Started with 20D have since used 40D and 50D. 7D will get an outing or few this year.

Here is an idea of the levels of dust that were getting blown across me

Camera is still working fine to this day, they are better sealed than some people give them credit for. The 7D is certainly better sealed than the XXD range - but obviously not as good as the 1D series.
 
At this point anyone looking smug is probably a Pentaxian.

The 7D is more sealed than your 50D was.

Just not on the same level as a pro camera.
 
looking at the shots above im well happy!

he said my 24-105 would be crap length but i reckon ill do alright!

:agree:

7D isn't sealed / built for full on soaking wet dooks and bashes like a pro body but should be fine if you use a bit of sense.
