Hi people

I have bought my dad and myself a webcam.

I have no idea how to set them up.

Do you have to belong to a chat room or messaging service?

Please help and speak basic please.

Try using msn messenger- probably the easiest way. Install the software, setup an account (if you dont have already), then add each other, and start a video call.
 
ok will set up my pc today and my dads tomorrow........may i pm you if i have probs?
 
Skype will also do video calls.
 
you need an msn live or messenger account to use msn though joanne, and watch for people offering to show you stuff, it might not be what you are expecting to see..
 
An alternative is Yahoo Messenger which I find to be slightly more reliable, but as with MSN you need to set up a yahoo account.
 
OK I have set up yahoo messenger on mine and my dads pc.

Both webcams are loaded in.

We can see each other but not hear each other.

Any suggestions??

Thanks for the warning Matty, but this will only be used for me and my dad.

Do your webcams have microphones? If not, this will be why :)
 
we have microphones that came with the webcams and are plugged in.
I think i have done everything right but i am missing something and its driving me mad.

Try loading sound recorder in windows (in start>programs>accessories>entertainment) and hit record- speak into the mic, and see if it picks it up.....

Done this and it do not work.

Check within here, that in properties, your looking at the recording rather playback.
 
OK Am I really thick.???

In order to speak to my dad do I have to do a pc--pc phone call?

and is this free.
 
I don't use Yahoo Messenger, but someone else who does may be able to help. When I used to use MSN Messenger you had to start the video sessions and the voice sessions separately. I've found Skype to be much easier for calls and video calls.
 
If your using msn, you need to do a "video call" which is webcam & mic- which is free. You can set the level of the microphone/speakers
 
I think this may be too late but don't just try to see each others webcams, you must "call" the other person to enable microphones. Also try looking in the call setup menus under tools to check you have selected the correct mic.
