Hi. If you're talking about getting to the first page of google you need to think carefully about your keywords. No magic but careful planning and some luck.

Thanks, Be a job to get onto first page i suspect, but yes this is the sort of thing. I think i'm right in saying its all in the key wording entered in the index page of ones web site ?.

You need to have keywords in your text amongst all your pages, have clear titles with relevant keywords also.
If you overdo it, it wont help, could even lower your rankings.

Links to your website also have a positive influence on rankings.
Also, Google takes it time up update its system, so it might take a few eweeks before you see your position increasing.

Consider registering to Google webmaster tools to check what search terms result in your website being shown etc.

Though google's system is sometimes very temperamental, my website was the second result for "landscape photography south wales" for around a week, its decided to go on page four now!

I used to write web pages in HTML, if you can access your source code you need to add your chosen words to the Meta Tags up near the header.

Thanks Sean, usful info.
Yes Graham, all my web site i built originally in HTML, just of late have updated it with Frontpage. Thanks for the help...

Have you submitted your site to Google/Yahoo yet? And also, create a Google local listing.

Then it's a case of quality keywords and quality inlinks to your site. It can be done, I'm on page one for my favoured keywords and within the first three pages for my next set, but it took a lot of work to get there, especially as I only have one page on html on a splash page with the rest being Flash. It took 6-9 months to get there, but hard work pays off.

There's no quick fix, but do what's been recommended here and you'll start moving up.

Good luck.

It is a very complex algorithm Google uses to determine search engine results.

If you want to rank high for your chosen keyword e.g. "photographer Norfolk" then I will give you a few top tips.

1. Content is key, make sure you include your keywords in your homepage content, title and meta tags. Also make sure you update your website regularly, Google thrives on new content.

2. Links, you have your content now Google looks at how many other websites are linking to yours. These are known as backlinks. Try and get backlinks on websites related to your websites content. This is a long process and will take months.

Both of these you should be doing constantly, and once you start seeing improvements from page to page of results it will encourage you in doing so.

Hi Guys, I run an e-commerce site so SEO is something I do every day. Here are a few pointers.

1. Try to include keywords in your page urls.
2. Forget about the meta keywords tag. Google and most search engines ignore it these days.
3. The meta title is important so make sure you include your keywords there
4. The meta description is important and should be a short snippet of what your page is about. Include important keywords.
5. Make good use of <h1> <h2> <h3> tags. Google loves these.
6. Write good content that will make sense to the person viewing your site, but ensure your important keywords are included.
7. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER hide text by making the colour the same as the background. This is black hat and won't help.
8. Remember the Google bot can not read Flash or Javascript.
9. Use good linking techniques and make sure that all your pages are linked to each other, so that google can crawl all around your site.
10. If you must have external links on your site use the rel="NOFOLLOW" to ensure the google bot does not follow them.
11. Sign up for article sites and write interesting articles relating to your site/product/hobby/photography etc. with links back to your site using good anchor text.
12. WAIT. Google does things in it's own time. You will NOT tame the beast.

When writing your titles, meta description and content beware that you don't keyword spam. To much repetition of your keywords will get you push way down the ranks.

Use this tool LINKY to check your keyword density. The consensus is that your keyword should not appear any more that around 6% otherwise google feels that this will not read well and considers it spamming.

Setup Google Webmaster Tools.

if you website does not automatically generate a XML sitemap file then use a free tool to create one. Then in Google Webmaster tools give google the url to this sitemap (This must be XML format and not HTML). This should include all the links to every page on your site and will help google find pages on your site.

A fantastically useful post Elliott, thank you! I'd never thought of #11 (writing for other websites) - I might have to see what there is that I would write for.
