You could get a free blog at Wordpress, or make flash type website at Wix.

I'm building my new site through Showit, I'm paying for it but you can get a five page site for free. It's drag and drop So unbelievably easy to build but it's flash. Wordpress is probably your best bet.

yolasite.com is another free one, used it recently for setting up a website for some friends for an xbox clan. Pretty simple, but has some nice features. It is limited in something though but most things can be worked around.

I am using 1and1 and have been sort of reasonably happy with them, but I wonder how others would rate them and the product.

Also, what other amateur pick and click website building package might be better instead.

1and1 are primarily hosts, and at hosting they are great. They only offer a free website builder to tempt beginners, and its fine for basic stuff.
