hey,

i'm pretty new to forums etc but anyway, i want to create a blog for my photography but a blog that allows pages to be created or a website that allows a blog either way is fine.

I have tried wordpress, problem being that i dont want to pay for a template or for the ability to customise fonts (really £30 a year just to change a font!).

does anyone know of any free sites i can use? or suggest a cheaper alternative.

Blogger is getting quite flexible these days with up to ten pages available plus the blog itself and you can use a custom domain name with it.
 
Ed, thank-you. How do i create a page on Blogger? I have an account set up but no clue how to use it! x

Depends which interface you're using. Switch to the new interface and there's an easy to find Pages link on the left to click and you create pages there.
 
Havent paid a penny for my photoix.co.uk wordpress site.
Not the most customised ever, but only because I wanted something simple.
No need to pay if you dont want to.

i dont suppose any of you know of any websites i can build to incorperate a password protected 'client area' for clients to 'log in' and view their images?
i could link a blog to that i guess ... also how can i go about getting a blog template to match my website? .. prob the wrong place to be asking since this forum is not about web design but hey ho.
 
Wordpress is completely free. What you pay for is work that people have already done for you. And even then there's still plenty of stuff out there that comes at no cost at all....paying just gives you more choice...

Giving that you want a site and a blog...wordpress sounds ideal really.
 
As others have said there are many, many templates out there for Wordpress that are free and it's not too difficult to build a site with static pages - if I can do it anyone can! :D My wedding site is Wordpress albeit with a paid theme as it gives me the options I require (a lot more than the ability to change fonts).

I also built one for my son's band a couple of weeks ago and this was done using the Wordpress Twenty Ten theme (free), as you can see it also has static pages and this took me less than a day. It's a pretty simple one but meets their requirements for now.

The Side Effects

As to password protected areas I'd agree with Harriers9, get the site built first and then worry about this. What I will say is that if you have clients maybe you should consider re-investing some of your earnings into either a paid theme with more functionality or host your client area with someone like Zenfolio which is what I do.
 
If you want your own domain name etc you can't go wrong with Vidahost £17 a year with a free domain name, one clcik wordpress install etc and excellent customer service.
