Can anybody who is pretty clued up when it comes to HTML or XML coding please help me?

I have uploaded my site using FTP and it has worked fine apart from one little problem, some of the text wont show up unless I double click where it is supposed to be. My site has a folder within it that has the font files within so Im thinking its not that, and also if I double click where it is supposed to be it will show up so Im also thinking it cant be the colour used....so now I am totally lost.

If anybody is a bit of a dab hand and wouldnt mind having a quick look then please let me know and I will PM you the web address.

Cheers

I'm thinking it could be the colour used. Once you have clicked on the link your browser would see it as a "active/visited link" and would show it in a different colour.
But i could be completely wrong. :bonk:

This thread is mostly useless without a link. But from what it sounds like it's your font colour being the same colour as the background. Change that in your CSS. It could also be something in your code that is causing a rendering issue with the browser. I've seen that happen before too, try it in a different browser and see if it is consistent.

yeah but the reason i didnt put the link up was because i didnt want the passers by to have a mooch then start to comment or critique the site when it is nothing more than a work in progress at the moment.

The thing is though the site works absolutley fine opening up in IE when i launch the local copy, it only goes belly up when i FTP it to the server.

Kayjay I will PM you the link, ig you dont mind have a little look and see what you think

Cheers

Woah, that is weird. Looks like there is something crazy going on with the Flash. In fact, it's all Flash.

It's definitely something in the flash file. When I view the swf in the browser the same thing happens, in Firefox and Safari.

yeah its a flash based front end but the site is back end coded in html.

I am no expert in this and im am just in the process of getting my head round html but was given this as a template and i liked it, it works really well when run on my local machine. I had this problem a while ago and a mate of mine had a play with it and uploaded it from his end and it worked but I just had to change my host so had to reload it myself this time and i have tried so many different things and cant get it working. Thought it might be the ftp client so tried filezilla and core but no joy, thought it might be my isp so tried it in work and still no joy so totally lost.

Thinking i may be best starting from scratch??!!

No, don't start from scratch, it's salvageable. I just can't do anything with a swf file to help you. Make sure there are no masks in the way. Also try removing things until the text appears normally as a way of tracking down the problem.

if its the flash file is there any reason why it works on my local machine no problem?
Could it be that something is going astray when it is uploaded?
I did notice that my images were renamed to .JPG when i uploaded them and they would not show up until i changed the extension to.jpg, as in lower case, then they worked.

Hmm, I'm going to do some snooping around. Let me get back to you. I've seen this before.

cheers mate appreciated.

i am at my wits end because i have scrutinised every file to check it is the same as my local copy. A few files were smaller in size when uploaded so i have redone them a few times individually to make sure they are the same and that hasnt solved it. I even edited the XML file to change the colour code and this didnt work either.

The title for your site, the text that keeps disappearing, try changing that from a text field to just some text sitting on the timeline in Flash and put it on the top layer.

PM me the link and I'll have a look for you. I'm a Flash designer, amongst other things webdesign related allegedly :D

sorry mate that is way above my level of ability. like i said i was given a template that we predefined as far the flash went, all i had to change was the text in XML file to get it to say what i want it to say.
I can make whatever changes i want here to the XML file and it works, but as soon as i put it up on the server it goes west!!

What font are you using, have you set the text field as dynamic and embedded the font if it's not one of the generic's?

You might as well have spoke hindu to me there mate. Im a simple guy with simple needs! haha

Open up the XML file in notepad and edit away....thats the extent of my ability with regards to this.

oh the font is lucida sans, and the SWF file is in a fonts folder that gets loaded up to the server too if this makes sense and helps?

I can see 4 different font files being loaded into the swf. Interesting.

Your main.swf file is looking for this file
tfile_gallery.undefined

What is that? It's not found.

Yeah in the folder there is helvetica, hermes, kroeger, and lucida sans but the text that is missing off the front page is the lucida sans text

tfile_gallery.xml is the file that i edit when i want to define how many pictures are shown and the file that it links to etc. This is also the file i edit when i want to change some of the text.

It is definately there otherwise the pictures would not show as it tells the swf what picture goes where etc. I can also see it there on the server??

Really need to have a look at main.fla to see how it's scripted. If you upload it to your webserver and give me the address I'll have a quick look for you.

<possible stupid question>

It's not anything to do with the upload mode (binary or ascii) is it? I've broken websites using the wrong one before

</stupidity>

:D

Core FTP is set to auto mode??

I can see 3 xml file being loaded; fontsLibrary.xml, tfile_gallery.xml and tfile_main.xml.

Is that the correct number?

ok will figure out how to grant access. only just set up with current host and trying to figure out how to allow ftp access to the site on their control panel so bare with me

Cheers

This is interesting. The last post describes your problem exactly.

Personally I wouldn't give ftp access to someone on a forum you don't know. Upload the FLA file as a zip file instead and give a download link.

i wasnt going to give ftp access, it tells me there is a public ftp area that i can put files and allow anyone to download them but cant figure out how to publish the file there and figure out what the link would be

Well, I can't compile it because I need the .as files too. I think the best bet is talking to the dude that did this for you.

Guys,

Thanks for all your help so far but afraid i am calling it a night as i am totally done in. Will pick this back up tomorrow if thats ok to see if I can get this mess sorted.

Once again many thanks

Paul

i could just zip up the whole site without the pictures to keep the size down. could do it tomorrow if this would help?

Cheers

That would help. I should be about to take a look. This is annoying me now, want to fix it. lol.

Kayjay, if you dont mind could you have a little look at the site files and tell me how much work would be involved in stripping it down to a basic HTML site rather than a flash site?
I like the look and layout of it as it is but thinking the flash is not really what people want to see, they want it simple but I am unsure as to how I would do it with the current template.

Cheers

Sorry dude, was in Blackpool covering the magic convention. I'll take a look tonight hopefully.

HTML site build would not be hard though.

Kayjay,

Sorry to pester but did you manage to have a look at the site and find the problem?
Or if it is easier give me a quick rundown on how to strip it to an HTML site?

Cheers
