Hello,

with a lot of advice from here i think i am at a point that my website can be seen as complete until i can start adding more content but the basic structure is there.

Just wondered what you think about the site, www.carlomullenphotography.co.uk

I have always seen photography as the perfect way to capture a moment, admittedly i don't have the greatest of memories. I love the way I can look back and view a moment in my life, this captured moment is what I want to pass on to others.

This doesn't really work for me, even with a little grammatical tweak

Looks great, fab call to action. There's a lot of 'I' statements which I would switch around to 'you' - customers are not interested in you they are interested in themselves, lol.
I's also drop the Animoto branding from the slideshow. but, like I say, looke great, very clear and straightforward

A word of warning...

It looks like you've used photographs on your products page from the Loxley brochure - of which I recognise the work of a photographer I know very well.

I know for an absolute fact that the photographer concerned will object VERY strongly if she sees her photographs on your site, as she has only given Loxley's permission to use them and not anyone else. She is very protective of her work and copyright.

Using those Loxley product pics on your site strongly suggests that you took those photographs - when you didn't. Technically this is a breach of copyright as the Loxley brochure acknowledges the copyright of the photographs used.

what do you mean call to action?

I agree about animoto branding but at the moment, cant afford the pro pack to remove branding.

When i spoke to Loxley and they didn't seem to mind, when i suggested i was using them on a website but obviously don't want to upset your friend, perhaps if i could get her details i could speak to her regarding the usage?

Why dont you just use your own shots?

someone who was good with photoshop (dont look at me - i'm okay but not pro standard with the editor) could probably insert your pictures into those shots, at least that way although you'd still be technically violating loxleys copyright for the pics of their products you wouldnt have another togs work showing on your site

have considered that but sometimes they a lot a bit un natural, if i cant get permission i will remove them until i sort my own examples

I've emailed her and no doubt she will be in touch with you in due course. But in my view you are breaching her copyright.

is it her copyright tho - if she took the shots for loxley as a commision, or if they've taken a picture of her work printed up, its possible its their copyright and if they've given permission....

still best avoided tho - to the OP i'd just take them down til its clarified IIWY.

As others have pointed out strapline needs rewriting, mentions 'moment' three times. Also too much marketese on the 'about' page.

Hi guys I registered to answer this thread. Carlo, indeed the images are Copyright, and using them may mislead a customer into believing they are your own images. I supply Loxley and they have actually just asked for more images. After reading this thread I am not so sure I want to supply them, if you have said they didn't mind, that is a big issue for me. See below an extract from an email I had from Loxleys just a couple of days ago, which clearly states their stance on copyright....

Anyway, no worries, cheers for removing, but just thought I would clarify the situation.

Where your images are used in print we credit you, ie “Images © Maria Murray”. We are currently working on a copyright page for our website crediting photographers for any images used on the website. It will also explain that the product images used on our site are copyright protected and should not be copied from the site for any other use.

canvases are cheap (comparitively speaking), framed prints are cheaper - so i'd suggest getting some of your own done as then snapping them and using those

they dont have to be loxley (unless you are specifically saying they are in the blurb) just any that look decent - worst comes to the worst you can hang them on your own walls , or flog them on ebay.

its academic now anyway - but the image he used was a picture of several canvases so the copyright belongs to the person who took the picture used, not the person who took the original pictures that were printed then shown in the shot.

and if the person who took the picture in question was an employee of loxley shooting on their time the copyright could belong to loxley.

technicalities aside i agree with you that its bad practice to use any pictures than imply you took shots that you did not, so its as well for the op to reshoot using prints of his own pictures as a subject matter

I have removed the example images as requested as i was not aware, i cannot however find the email from Loxley that stated that i could use the images, so i would not like to break up your working commitment with them.

It may just be worth confirming with Loxley that you do not wish others to use the images, as i am sure they may do so, with the digital versions of their selling options available to all .

This is something i want to do asap, just trying to get some more shoots organised to give a better selection of images for printing.

I never thought at any point that i was advertising the images shown as prints were being used as my own i was only showing examples of products NOT the images, but i can see how that can be misleading. so have taken them down.

I never intended to rip off Marias images as my own.
 
All other things aside I will never deal with any business where the only direct contact was by a mobile phone, it's just a personal thing for me and possibly others.

i think this has been debated many times,

A landline for me cannot always be manned, where as my mobile is with me all the time, therefore this is the best option for me to receive calls.

But each to their own
 
What does everyone think about the Products menu link, i am have been advised that maybe this should read Packages or Services. My intention was to link to products with the images available, as they have now been removed for the time being, is Products still relevant?

A landline can have call forwarding set up, to go through to your mobile, or there are 0800 and 03 numbers that can go through to any number.

Thanks, these are aspects that i will consider further down the line, as i am only doing photography part time, i am arranging shoots around my full time job, which means mobile is the best option for now.

Maria, I contacted Loxley to clear up any confusion, and think i had been misinformed at some point as a result the images i am using have been removed from my site.

What Loxley replied was "Unfortunately we are not able to allow you to use the images we have on our
website as the images on our products are copy right protected with the
photographer who have given us permission to use their files.

We are currently looking into have a range of images that will not be
copy right protected but at the moment are unsure when this will be
available."
 
how does this sound

'I have always seen photography as the perfect way to capture a moment in time that can never be replicated. Photography allows me to revisit the past vividly and it is these captured moments that I hope to give to others in the photographs I take
 
No offence but I would ditch it completely - it's just waffle which states the obvious. The point of a strap/tagline is to describe your services and any USP as concisely as possible.

E.g. 'Carlo Mullen- Portrait photographer with over x years experience'.
