We had a Talk computer bit but that seems to have gone, if it is still here please point me in the right direction, thanks.....

Anyway I have a contract with Fasthosts and my website is more a blog than website, I dont sell from it or have any kind of trading from it, yet everytime I try to cancel it they blind me with stuff I havent heard of before.......all sales patter stuff, I have had this website for 3 years now and dont want to lose the name so is there any way I can get the £20 a month bill rid of and go to someone else but keep my web name as fasthosts only want to make my subscription higher every time I call.

I have now taken down my website in hope I can transfer it

I bought a domain name with 123registration and transferred it to my preferred hosting company Tsohost a few months later, didn't take long at all. I'd look at the smallprint of your contract with Fasthosts and see what it says about transferring to another host, £20 per month seems like a lot of money just for a domain and hosting. Domains only cost about £6 for 2 years, and my hosting is £15 annually. Hope that helps.

Thanks Dab I have looked and I do own the name but according to Fasthots I rent it so to say...through Tucows, I have no idea where I stand here as all I want is my registered web name that looks like I dont own it transferring to anoyher host............in the few seconds I transfer it you can guarantee the web host buys it and then sells it to highest bid

What's your domain name? I'll have a look and see who it's actually registered with (and to) and we can go from there. Don't worry about fasthosts snapping it up, even if you let the domain lapse you get a 30 day grace period where nobody else can register it.

Indeed you are, you just need to pick another host. They should have pages in their 'help' section about transferring a domain you already own, the process can differ slightly from host to host.

Looks like you may not be the only one having problems...

Though someone has written a blog about how to do this:

http://no2fasthosts.wordpress.com/howto-transfer-a-couk-domain-away-from-ukreg-fasthosts/

Looking at the comments lower down in that post, someone said that Fasthost were preventing them access to their control panel because they hadn't paid a hosting bill, but as long as the domain registration is paid up front they have no legal reason to prevent you.

As it says in the post though, it's always worth having your domain registration with a different company to your hosting. It prevents just this sort of pain.

Hope this helps, and I hope you get it sorted!

-Ian.
