Wedding in Sunny Italy - Any Tips?

Towards the end of July I am attending a wedding in Spoleto, Central Italy as a guest. I would really like to try and get some good shots so that afterwards I can put together a book for the couple.

I have a Canon 40d and my main lens is 17 – 85mm IS but I also have a 50mm 1.8 f/8 on its way to me at the moment. I also have a hoya UV filter and a petal hood. My main question is - are those lenses suitable to use? I imagine it will be very sunny where we are going and my 17 – 85mm seems to cope quite well in sunny weather but I just wanted to check if it will be adequate.

Also if anyone has any tips on how to get the best shots at a wedding it would be appreciated. I am thinking I will try and get more reportage shots rather than posed ones as they have an official photographer who is going to do those.

Also any tips on the best setting to use on my camera to try and get the best shots would be fantastic. I am still learning how to use my DSLR and have only just ventured onto the manual settings and don’t want to make a costly mistake on the day!

Thank you in advance :)

I have just done a wedding in Certaldo,Tuscany. The harsh sunlight makes for some interesting shadows and exposures,to say the least,if you are not careful. Positioning is very important in those respects as is the time of the wedding and the position of the sun.

If you want to do candids, why not hire a 70-200 zoom for the event? Stewart does them I think.

You will need your hood attached,a CPL is a good thing,I don`t know Canon gear at all,but your camera should be fine.Exposure compensation is helpful,I assume your body has that, again I don`t know Canon gear at all,but surely it will have.If so,practice with it and learn what it does.

Oh,it is damned hot down there now,so July would be hotter I would imagine, wear something light and airy........

Hi Fracster - thanks for the advice :)

I never even thought about the possibility of hiring a lens. I had a look and saw this

works out at £56 for a week which is pretty good. Not quite sure who you are referring to when you say Stewart as I'm quite new around here.

I was wonderng how hot is was going to be, I had thought it might be pretty sweltering out there around then.

DiddyDave / Alib - you know us women don't travel light - I doubt I could fit you into my case even if I tried :p

awwww, we are both little honest! :)

Hope you enjoy yourself.

To be more serious for a mo, try to watch out for harsh sunlight, it can cast some very unflattering shadows. I'd hope the official tog will be looking for what is called top shade, get them out of the glare and into dome diffused light. You may not have the opportunity to shoot those shots but if they are sheltering from the sun at any time.......... go get 'em. :)
