and where are you suggesting to do this? In the church (where the lighting is really poor )- I think not

Who wants to shoot at 1.4 anyway (unless you wanted to anyway for artistic reasons)

I assumed he was referring to max aperture for light gathering for focus purposes rather than actually shooting the razor thin DoF a 1.4 produces

this is the issue. If you are in a dark church, at the limit of your kit, being forced to shoot at 1.4, you are on a hiding to nothing. It is at this point you want a tripod / monopod, and/or a body that has better higher ISO performance, and still subjects

When you are at the limits, a razor thin DOF, just adds to your problems

If I were you...

Nikon D600 or D700 with D7000 for backup (I'd probably choose the D600 since the controls are laid out pretty much identically to the D7000)
Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8
Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 or 80-200mm f/2.8
Nikon 18-200mm on the D7000
