I was a 2nd shooter at a wedding yesterday and although i was given lenses to use by my friend i`m looking to get some of my own for future weddings, i currently own a canon 70-200 f4 L,canon 50mm F1.8, and sigma 105 F2.8 , the lighting was challenging so i would appreciate some advice on what i should but next my budget is approx £500.00 and my camera is a 70d
 
I'd go for a wider fast prime. The Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art is a brilliant lens for the money. £636 new so second hand should be able to get fairly close to your budget.
 
Apart from faster lenses, such as a f2.8 70-200mm, f1.2? 50mm. As it is a crop sensor camera, maybe a nice fast 85mm might assist for portraits

But just remember that you have to carry it all and Weddings are notoriously long days. I would not take more than three lenses (but two bodies- just for backup and ease of not constantly changing lenses.

Rather than lenses, have you considered what you might need in the off-camera flash department, especially when the lighting is "challenging"?
 
I hate to say only you can decide, but it does depend very much on your style. How do you want to shoot, decide that and then buy the kit.
 
Thanks Guys, i was using a 85 f2 l, 50mm f1.4 and i think it was a 24-105 l f3.5 my preference is a zoom and i appreciate this is a long term project regarding aquiring kit but i will certainly take all advice on board, regarding the challenging light i do have off camera flash options but sometimes it wasn`t feasable, my style? that`s the question i haven`t quite worked out yet, one thing i`m wary of is buying other brands rather than Canon ,in that are they as good especially as the price difference can be similar

Because you don't need one more lens, you need a handful. And only you can decide your priorities.

That said, on a crop camera >80% of my wedding shots were on the 17-55 2.8.

I think that since the Sigma Art range came out the question should rather be "Are the Canon lenses as good even though they cost more?"

Thanks Phil, yes i know it`s more than one and ultimately my decision i`m just in a quandry over what next? i`d prefer a short zoom 24-105 or 24-70 but will the quality suffer and i`m going by friday in poor light so F4 probably won`t cut it so i wonder if i need faster than F2.8 obviously the budget will need to increase

On a crop as a starting point I'd buy the 17-55mm f2.8 as Phil suggests it is a great starting point and will cover 90% of what you want to shoot. I really wouldn't be looking at anything starting at 24mm!

I wouldn't personally consider either of those on a crop body - I know some people do, but 24 on crop is 'neither nowt nor summat', and f4 on a crop Canon in this day and age is (again IMHO) flipping stupid.
IMHO your only zoom option is the 17-55 2.8IS.
