Yes
I just have a question or two for you.

We paid our photographer £400 to turn up and shoot, then travelling costs of around £40, then £400 towards the album etc with the remainder to be paid off after we've chosen what we want.

We've had the previews through etc with price lists for further photos:

5"x4"/5"x5" - colour/B&W/Sepia = £10.95/£14.95/£14.95

going up to

10"x10" - colour/B&W/Sepia = £29.95/£39.95/£39.95

I think it was a 20"x18" was £200 in colour.

Are these the normal sorts of prices that you guys charge for prints?

I don't know if it's normal, but it's flippin' expensive. I'd possibly be feeling a little like I'm going to be skint for a while if I were you.

Did you know what you'd be paying before you gave him the job?

My missus arranged it all and prices for him coming and the album was quoted as £1500-1800. This was before I really got back into photography so I had no idea about it.

:(

I said when I read it I felt like my wallet was being bum rushed by him! :(

Tempted just to have his album that we've part paid for and then make several photobooks myself using the best of over 1000 photos taken by guests, including one guy who took every shot the pro tog took as well!

Depends ont he quality and the reputation of the photographer. I know one well respected professional, true professional, not a wedding only man...charges £90 for a 7x5 in a folder.
The vale is NOT IN THE PAPER & INK, it is the image that is the intrinsic value, the paper is just one way of displaying it.

It does seem a bit top end though, and like the photographer is lifting your leg. How many pictures in the album?

are you sure those aren't for extra prints on top of the album which you've already paid for.

£200 for a 20"x18"? Flippin' heck - I though the £40 I charged for that was steep, I may need to revise my prices upwards :D

Are you not also paying for the time spent on editing etc? Yeas you may be paying him for the week, but if it's a week spent PPing the shots then is it not a bit more palatable?

I dont take a week to p/p.

Maybe 4 hours tops.

So one first meeting one hour

go to venue one hour

go to venue again a week before one hour

meet couple again one hour

do wedding best part a a day 8 hours

p/p four hours

deliver photos half hour

pick up order half hour

deliver final order one hour

total 18 hours

hardly a weeks work and thats from start to finish over the period of up to a year.

Why would B+W and sepia prints cost more than colour - unless the quality of those is better in some way?

total 18 hours

am not a wedding photographer but 18 hours work can cost alot more than people sometimes (in my job i would be looking towards £3500 without other costs) expect it too cost, but i do think the prices are steep as i cant see them taking a week or two processing the pics.

Are you comparing apples with apples though? Don't assume that just because you only spend 4 hours on pp for example that everyone else does :nono:

It's not uncommon to spend more time than that just on the 30-60 pics for the album. I'd factor in more like plus a full day for the first rough edit for the slideshow (choosing dvd) and at least a half - full day to put the album together.

OP. For reprints they seem a little on the high side, but I have seen dearer, as somebody else said are you sure thats not extra pic with pages in the album??

:agree:

I've never known anyone ask what print etc. prices are like - they usually concentrate on the Shoot &/or album alone

I think the OP's quote print fees are high for an 'average' tog, well respected and 'known' ones do indeed charge those sorts of prices & more. But then we/they are selling time & expertise on PP work - the paper is just an incidental cost, and big names will have much bigger expenses than the chap working alone from home

so you paid £450 for the day, and £400 for the album.
which I assume will be the equivalent of £36 5x5" shots.
I assume that they're medium format in that aspect ratio....???
so good old fashioned commercial quality shots. I presume hand printed or laser printed by a specialist company from scanned negatives.

It seems not cheap, but not hugely unreasonable. If he does the work himself, there is a lot of work that goes into hand printing medium format. Maybe he's not doing it the most cost effective way though.

All I'm saying is, is that it doesn't look like he runs to Happy Snaps for the prints at 15pence each.

From a cost/time point of view. I shoot events for someone in the Midlands. £150 for 5 hours work...then there's sorting the photos. then posting them and printing some out of him. I do it out of love for the event really because after postage £5-10 this time round (bah his deadline for the magazine), a selection of prints and disks for the digital negatives (£12) and travel/food expenses for the evening (i don't live locally anymore) that comes down to way less that £10 an hour

Thread cleaned - please stay on the topic and not get into personal insults or the ins and outs of wedding photography.
