What to shoot, what to see, where to eat.

Planning on catching Saturday's 1pm gun and aiming to get up Calton Hill at some point, going to take a topless bus ride as well. All these are slightly weather dependent - I don't mind a bit of gentle drizzle or a slight nip in the air but I'm getting too old to get cold wet and miserable!

We're staying out near Haymarket Station so any recommendations for reataurants in that area would be more than welcome - we'll have HER mother with us and she doesn't eat spicy.

Don't think we'll have time to do the zoo since we arrive at 8pm on friday and leave at crack of sparrow frat on monday.

One last thing, are there any local derbies on this weekend? Would be nice to avoid anywhere that's likely to be full of footy supporters!

Depending on what kind of food you like:

Cantina Mexicana on Rose Street (West End of Rose Street) I really love their nachos!
Tiphoo Sahib on Rose Street is a great Indian restaurant for lunch although it's not opening until 2.30pm at the moment - I think due to Ramadan. Even their spicy food isn't too spicy but the guys in there are good for recommending spicy and non spicy dishes.
Izzy on Lothian Road, Japanese food. I love their Sushi but the hot food looks good too.
I've never been thrilled with the restaurants on George Street, I find the service can be very unpredictable and often quite slow.

In terms of things to do at the weekend i'd maybe avoid the Botanics as I was there on Thursday and it's fairly bare at the moment - I guess it's the time of year.

going to take a topless bus ride as well.

A lot has changed since I was last in the Burgh

You shouldn't have any problems with football crowds this weekend. As for eating, afraid I can't help you much with the Haymarket area, I tend to stick to the Grassmarket area.

Nod not been there in ages so no help with the food. but make sure youbring warm things this far noth shock to your system..youbeing a sourthen softie and all that

Don't worry, I shall be bringing plenty of warm clothing with me, although the apparent softness is merely a layer of insulating padding for a rock hard inner core. I'm sure I can find some nice whiskey to warm the cockles should they get a bit nippy anyhow.

At that end of town and if money is no object try Oloroso on Castle Street - rooftop restaurant that has brilliant views of the city and over the Forth to Fife or for a pub lunch get a pie and pint in Bert's Bar on William Street, a stone's throw from Haymarket. As for things to do, there's probably too much to see in a weekend to summarise it here, but I'd suggest avoiding Princes Street and Rose Street wherever you can. In spite of their fame they're kind of full of run down and tacky shops. A full walk down the Royal Mile from the Castle to Holyrood with a detour to the Grassmarket is always good. If you're energetic a walk to the top of Arthur's Seat, if you're not energetic then a stroll from Haymarket through the West End to the Dean Gallery and a visit to Dean Village is beautiful especially at this time of year.

One of the nicest (non celebrity chef) places to eat in EDI - suggest that you book.
V close to Haymarket.

The museum is worth a trip and there are great views from the restaurant there as well (as well as yummy food).

If you want to blow the budget, there there is always Martin Wishart, again you GOTTO book.

Some great old houses around Haymarket, so have your camera at hand - I'd be interested in seeing some pics from a 'visitor' to Ol Reekie.

Enjoy .... :naughty:
