40 today, mid life crisis ! Went into Jessops and Jacobs looking at a new lens for my Pentax (been shooting Pentax for almost 20 years), as usual nothing decent in stock. Came out of Jessops with a bag full of Nikon and a melted credit card !

Don't want another what manufacturer is best thread but was looking for advice on where to get some decent priced batteries for a D7000. I have a wedding to shoot next week and would like to do it with the new gear but would need some spare batteries. Also, if anyone can advise rough battery life on a D7000 would be much appreciated ...
 
Happy birthday & Congratulations on the purchase of your D7000, should give you many years of happy snapping.

I usually get about 800-900 shots per charge. Not so sure about cheapest place to buy batteries, but only thing i would say is dont buy 3rd party ones.

why no 3rd party batteries, i have 8 3rd party ones for mt d700/d300 and 4 for my gx20 and not one problem with any of them come to think of it i have never had any problems with 3rd party batteries for any dslr.
 
TBH a bit of an impulse buy. I do believe the K5 is a better body, the handling and ease of adjustment and shooting modes are superb, the high ISO is very useable.
I am a great dreamer and window shopper, high street stores carry very limited stock of Pentax kit. I was also just back from Dubai and EVERY pro out there was shooting Nikon. Even with the great weather sealing on the Pentax, it suffered terribly going from aircon room to outdoors (48 deg !), which is to be expected but the Nikons just kept working.
I am slo now doing some weddings and use flash ( speedlight) a lot, the SB900 is a beast of a speedlight. There is no perfect camera or system, for me the Pentax has more ease of use and is more pro in it's aproach (no auto mode, scene modes etc, apperture & shutter priority mode is superb) ...
Just remembered two niggles witht he Pentax :-
1) Autofocus, particularly in low light is very poor
2) X-sync max 1/180th second a bit slow

Anyway, I was not meant to be getting into a maker debate ! Many thanks for the birthday wishes, I can now blend in as a canikon user ! (still have a Pentax Kx and 100mm macro at work though !)

From my searches, in stock third party about £30, amazon Nikon original £43
 
I have used 3rd party batteries and had no problems. I often use 7dayshop.com although as the products come from jersey they can take about a week to arrive. Enjoy your Nikon :-)
 
I was speaking from bad experience using 3rd party cells in D5000 and D60, such as poor fitment, fluctuating charge levels and generally cells holding 1/2 the charge of nikon equavalents.
However if these batteries work well for you, than fair enough more power to you :)

If you go for a decent brand (Phottix would be my choice) then you tend to find they can be every bit as good as the oem batteries and sometimes even better.

Go for the cheapest, unbranded one you can find and, well :shrug:
 
Congrat's on buying a great camera. The D7000's battery life is so good you probably only need one extra. Nikon has built battery recognition into the D7000 (and D5100) and there aren't any third-party batteries yet. Kerso seems to have some of the genuine article at the moment and that's probably the cheapest source.

All Nikon dslrs have the built-in battery recognition, you find that when a new model comes out that non-oem batteries that worked in one camera (think the EN-EL3e from the D200) suddenly didn't work in the new model (in this case the D300). It usually takes the third party manufacturers a few weeks, but they always have compatible batteries out pretty quickly.
 
Thanks to all the replies, think I will get away with one spare for now so ordered a Nikon original.
 
Bought a couple 3rd party from 7dayshop for my k-5 on first charge and has lasted me over 600 pics already. Battery sign shows 2/3 full which in reality means I can take another 400 pics or so. Bought a couple of those for 6£ each...

Btw d7k was a very nice camera during the couple weeks I had it. Just not nearly as good as the k-5 :)

I would agree the K5 is a great body, but it just happens that it's two weakest areas effect my shooting the most, focusing in low light and low X sync speed. I was looking at a full system, not just the body. The Nikon with the SB900 is pretty awesome combination for what I am shooting. It's like buying a house or a car, there is nothing perfect and unfortunately you cannot pick and choose individual parts to make a whole, so ultimately there will be a compromise and some features that are not your favourite compared to other systems. As long as you justify to yourself then all is good :-)
