another no so honest ebay seller
described as having one slight scratch on the lens which is kind of true but a little more than slight it as many many other fine scratches and scuffs on the front lens element
the box is however mint as is the case
no front lens cap stated in the listing which is probably why it is so scratched then if he lost that
additional pics were offered which I requested but never materialised
af is gratie and noisey as is mf
serves me right for being so trusting
listed as 2 years old but has the old coating not the smooth
paid by ebay pay pal

Just open a dispute you will get your money back. I always find second had glass to be expensive on the whole. Rarely does modern lenses get to half the price, usual about 30% cheaper. I just prefer paying the premium and get the 2/3/5 year warranty.

the lens was 167 so had the description been accurate then it would have been a good price best new grey price which was my next move had I not found this one was DR at 279 + delivery

Think it is 50/50 on whether you get an honest seller, or buyer for that matter.

I recently sold something on eBay, only £20 odd + £20 to post to Portugal.

Buyer claims it wasn't received and asked for a refund. Fortunately I sent it 'recorded delivery' so have proof that it was indeed delivered.

He tried to open a dispute but was out of the 45 day time limit so that saves me a load of grief proving to eBay/Paypal that I sent it and he received it.

Does seem strange that he left me positive feedback but now says that was in error as he bought an identical product from someone else and that is the one he received and meant to leave feedback for.

Looking at his feedback he did buy a similar item from someone else but I suspect (without any proof) that he also said the same to the other seller, ie I left feedback for the wrong item, and tries to claim it wasn't received.

No matter what I sell now it all gets posted recorded delivery, even if the item is only worth a couple of quid.

Hope it all works out for you but make sure you open a dispute within the 45 days even if he says he will refund you etc. He could just delay until the 45 day limit is over and it is then too late to open a dispute.

Probably not the best way to deal with it, under the new eBay guidelines any item described as used is allowed to have/be scratched and there is no exclusion for optical glass (even though scratches can actually completely ruin the lens).

EBay will find in the sellers favour if a used item being scratched is the only complaint.

The OP will be better off dealing nicely with the seller and "encouraging" a return in exchange for no negative feedback or low stars being left.

I've run an ebay store for over 5yrs and ebay almost never sides with the seller. I had one customer recently who had left a pair of sunglasses bought from me in the bag unprotected for a weekend then complained they got scratched in the process and this was down to the quality opened a dispute and one. Another customer bought a hoodie and it was to small so asked to return it to exchange for a larger size, I agreed, it never arrived. The customer had no proof of return postage, they opened a dispute and won. Ebay have no interest in protecting sellers just buyers, this is just 2 of the many ridiculous wins by some of my ebay customers. Obviously you try and sort it out with the seller first but if they do not want to know open a dispute.

i decided not to bid on a lens the other day, the sellers description was vague, sold to someone for £100 less than online used go for, but seller only would post standard 2nd class, No worth the risk

Another chaps lens, asked which fit it was canon, nikon, olympus etc and he didn't know,

Starting to thing eBay is not the best place to buy a lens after reading this thread:nono:
 
I have sent the seller a diplomatic message and am awaiting his response
I also bought a sigma 50mm f1.4 which is 1 month old and purchased from ffordes this hasn't arrived yet, better pics on the ebay add and has uk warranty so wasn't particularly cheap
I have more faith in this one

nothing wrong with ebay if you pay by ebay pay pal
the buyer is well protected
if the seller decides to opt for second class post and you don't receive it paypal will just refund you
the onus is on the seller to provide proof of delivery
technically you can send any item back with any penis and bull story and get a refund from pay pal as long as you also have proof of delivery return

update on my dodgy purchase ..................... nothing lol
whilst the seller was very quick to reply to me during the auction and very helpful including postal and tracking info supplied from his mobile
I have not received any response to my complaint perhaps his mobile is now flat roflol
I shall give him 24 hours before I open a dispute
just glanced across at my nice mint empty box which is now looking very tempting to send that back for a refund lol

Its just over 2 years old, I'm not near the camera or the lens at the moment as I'm away, but the scratch isn't too big, I've put minor as I went into a place where there sell or fix cameras and they said its not a major scratch and was probably caused without the cover on it, there are a few filters that can go with it aswell I think.

What was the sellers feedback like?
Is the noisy/graty focus normal on those lenses, if not then is it faulty?

I am not sure whether sellers are trying it on or just don't really bother to describe properly but I have received a fair few items that have not been as described and I don't tend to buy much used on there anymore.
However, I take selling very seriously and have a lot of feedback that says words to the effect of "better than described" because I have actually been honest!

If eBay didn't side with the buyer it would probably start to fail as a lot of private sellers really are useless.

just checked RMSD he was charged £7.65 I shan't bother complaining about the £2.35 yet lol

The postage is not for dispute. If you don't like the postage charge don't buy the item (or report for excessive postage)

I tend to send everything Special Delivery these days as it makes it simple and it is not me paying the postage anyway...

nearly 1000 all positive so 100% positive feed back out of nearly 1000 items
clearly he is some sort of trader using a private listing will check out what he has bought and sold

just saying i hate it when people stab in the dark for postage costs without actually weighing and getting it right. (£9.70 was RMSD on my lens total weight 1.4kg :D)
 
'Postage' doesn't just cover the actual post office charges though. You have packaging and other associated costs to bear in mind as well.

Agree, a lot of people take the p with postage. I however usually get it the other way round and people pay less that it actually costs me to send :eek:
 
checked out his feed back a bit
all his selling is private but from what i can see of the a+ replies looks like he sells alot of 00 guage railway models
buying side is the usual bits and bobs and a wedding dress lol
with nearly 1 k A+ feed back perhaps the sigma is well used for his listings and he's selling it now as he has run out of trains to sell roflol

it's called recycling these days and that's what I do post out all the packaging I get

I have had a very professional reply to my complaint we are negotiating
images don;t seem to be particularly affected by the bad condition of the front glass element
should I just send it back or take a partial refund
nothing has been offered yet

Try taking a photo of a strong light source in the corner or just out of shot. I think you only notice scratches in extreme cases and flare from it will be where it will show if at all.

I've also seen on here (although I can't find it) that running a black felt tip over the scratch to coat the sides of the scratch helps. From memory, this was suggested by someone who repairs lenses....
 
I would send it back. It doesn't sound in the best of health and will be a wotsit to sell on.

It's a while since I had one but I do remember that the HSM manual focus felt gritty. I did try mine against another in a shop and it felt just the same so some grittiness does seem to be the normal state of things. It'll depend on how gritty it feels though as to if it's normal or not. I don't remember MF or AF being noisy though.

OMG NO!

I never had that squeeky noise (although he does seem to turn it very fast, possibly a lot faster than anyone would in real world use so maybe he's a bit ham fisted) and at one point it looks like his goes stiff (:nuts:) which mine never did to that extent. So, no. Mine felt a bit gritty and there was also some difference in feel which seemed to move around as if it related to some floating internal mechanical bit or other but it was never like that one in the vid.

I don't remember any real problems with my 30mm. It was a joy to use and the only issue was the slight grittiness when manually adjusting focus. Deffo nothing as extreme as the guy in the link but I do wonder if the speed and possibly pressure used in that vid isn't at least a part of the problem, I certainly never handle any gear that roughly.

well we have had a message or two
and he is neither keen on giving a refund with the excuse he is going on holiday and sold the lens to help fund his holiday and will be away for 2 weeks
nor is he keen to do a partial refund just mentioning that the camera shop he took it to to px it in at suggested 150 200 on ebay
which reads to me sorry sir we don't want this lens in px nor do we want to buy it SIR
your best bet is to stitch some one up with it on ebay lol
certainly might explain why the listing picture was poor and only one with an excuse about an ebay uploading problem
and the fact that I never received the promised picture with the excuse he was a way till tuesday and he'll try to get his Gf to take some
I do like a good moan sometimes worth the price I paid for the lens lol
I feel i may need to press the dispute button soon and package the nice empty box to send back lol

The shop who were going to trade it in, which I wish I had done now as I'm frantically trying to get holiday stuff sorted as we speak and make sure I've got everything to go as I'm working long hours tomorrow to get the extra day off I needed. As I'm going to be away there won't be anyone here to accept a parcel. This is what I would have normallt suggested. The noise u mention is a standard noise as purchased, no need for me to mention as my mate has identical lens and same on his, think we even bought around same sort of time. I didn't really want to refund anything as its a fully working lens, I've had photos put into magazines with that lens up until I stopped using it in july. I isted it at £100 and I wasn't sure what it would go for, just needed the money for the trip. The shop said to expect it to go to 150 to 200 in that conditon and that anyone buying will no they are not buying a new item considering the cost brand new. Maybe try the lens I had no issues with it

An ex of mine makes a living buying and selling and the trouble she gets from ebay is out of this world. She used to get electrical items returned which were the right model but wrong serial number, different stuff altogether to what was sent out and people denying receiving stuff.

Lots of people out their are basically lying cheating scumbags.
