Well I received my used Sigma 30mm f1.4 and gues what

whats the point of sending back an empty box? youll probably ruin any chance of ebay helping you.

I wouldn't actually do that hence the lol's
but as has already been mentioned people do buy stuff return the item for a refund with something else in the box and they do get their refund and the new goods, as all ebay are interested in is proof of delivery and proof of return from both parties

I'll try and get some pics that show the state of the front lens element
but it's difficult for them to show on the camera pics

update return and full refund has now been offered but as far as I am aware the buyer has to return it at his cost
ebay only refund the amount you paid
On a lighter note my sigma 50mm f1.4 is showing as sent now and delivery tomorrow at 1 pm rmsd
now lets hope that is as described little used and 1 month old

Yeah, unfortunately for you, unless the seller's returns policy specifically states otherwise, the onus is on the buyer to pay return postage. Make sure you do all of this properly using the ebay dispute console as it allows you to tag the tracking number which will help you enormously in getting your money back.

Out of interest though, is the lens actually functionally okay? I only ask as it sounds like you got it for a pretty decent price and maybe it's worth you keeping it and saving yourself potential aggro? Fully understand if it's leaving a bit of a sour taste though.

I was quite happy to pay up to 210 for what I thought was a reasonable lens with a slight scratch any more and I would have just bought new at 279 from DR or panamoz
it does however seem to function okay if a little noisy and slow but apparently they are a bit like that
I haven't tried it thoroughly yet near a light source to see if the heavy scratching causes any flare
The main issue is all my equipment is mint and like new I don't like having poorly looked after kit
I would have listed it with every defect lets face it he tried to palm a rough lens on some poor mug on ebay bit like the pro tog who tried to palm me off with a rough 7d with some clever camera work and lie about the 100k shutter count at 30kish
The other 7d I bought off ebay that I currently have was like new but no box and a 3k shutter count so there are honest people out there
The 70-200 2.8 is I bought off there for 900 is also mint and perfect
I just wanted what I thought I was bidding on
was quite cheap though shame it's a bit too rough

That sucks about the bad ebay purchase Tony!

I've bought 3 peices of glass from eBay (including a 30mm 1.4 funnily enough) and all have been fine.
Annoyingly had an issue with a buyer, but that's another story.

and the petrol and time to get to PO.

Or the bus fare if you don't drive and live in the country with no local PO. It all adds up and can be quite fair. Often a rip off though.

I had a thief try that one on me a few years ago with a phone, eBay sided with me when I brought up the disparity in parcel weights. Crooked idiot actually got booted from eBay for trying it and I resold the empty box with charger, instructions etc for about £30 :D.

and what about the packaging?

and the petrol and time to get to PO.

If the buyer thinks the p&p are high (even slightly more than basic postage) they are beginning to mark sellers down. Its being discussed over at MSE in their auction discussion forum people are complaining about having selling privledges restricted after as few as 3 poor p&p star scores.

If you like your kit mint why in earth did you buy a damaged lens for only £70 less than a new one? That doesn't make any sense to me....

I paid 167 and the description implied it was good apart from one slight scratch
negotiations on my complaint with the seller are now concluded and I have a scratched lens for the princely sum of 137
so I now won't have to pack it drive to the post office stand in a que and pay 8 quid to send it back

Sorry, my mistake, you said you would have paid up to £210, that sounds a lot for a scratched lens, especially if mint kit is your "thing"

I doubt the scratch will impact on image quality anyway, especially not if you've seen the famous images posted by one of the US lens rental companies (lots of links to them here on TP) of shots taken with a lens with a totally smashed front element.

.....and don't forget to leave appropriate feedback....

Looks to have ended up as quite a bargain then. Cheap price in the end, luck was on your side.

I was thinking more along the lines of inappropriate

.....an accurate and factual description of your dealings will warn others and not be removed by ebay.....

and give you a warm glowing feeling as he gets what he deserves! :D

people often get round that by leaving A+ feed back with negative comments
I was thinking "A+ but the guy tried to stitch me with a dodgy lens "

If you leave a negative comment with a positive rating then the other party can have the comment removed, leaving just a positive score...

at least it will be there till it is removed
I could always buy some cheap model train bits off him on a weekly bases allowing me to post some negative comments
like " I am still annoyed about that lens you stitched me with "

I would be completely truthful (and perhaps give a neutral)
"Item not as described and in poor condition, seller gave part refund to make up for it"

That way every new buyer will know to pressure him when he tries again :nono:.

Only sellers do this because they stupidly can not leave neg feedback only buyers.

I don't think he has tried stitching you up. Its different peoples interpretation of "small scratch". They said it doesn't effect the images, and from what i can see it doesn't. I think he has been reasonable i would give him positive or neutral.

Agreed, if both parties are now happy with the deal then there is no reason to leave negative.

Boils me wee the amount of stupid feedbacks get left on eBay even after a mutual agreement. We got a few neg marks recently for not offering free returns FFs.

a true and accurate bit of feed back should be left in this instance imo
I haven't done so yet

Which is exactly why you should tell the truth! Ebay only remove comments that are offensive or not factual.

Feedback is YOUR perception of the transaction and is optional. If you feel it has been a negative experience then that is the feed back you should leave. Can you honestly say that this has been a positive experience? If not then you should leave neutral or no feedback at all. Everyone who looks at sellers feedback relies on honest feedback given by buyers.

Heather

well it wasn't a positive experience and wasted a huge amount of my time
to me the guy used ebay to dispose of a poor quality abused lens with a poor quality picture and false information
clearly a bit of an ebay wheeler dealer type albeit his replies to my complaint were very professional
I'd sooner have paid more for a proper mint copy I didn't expect the lens front element to be so scratched and marked. The listing stated one slight scratch I think he omitted the word thousand
perhaps his day job is an estate agent lol

Can you honestly say that this has been a positive experience?

if its reached a mutually happy ending then why not.. no reason not to explain what happened in the comments box though.

or no feedback at all.

god i HATE that. people that leave no feedback are a complete nuisance. ive had several successful transactions recent and had no feedback. its the whole point of ebay, to be able to look at the reputation of the seller/buyer.

I just set mine to leave auto positive feedback. When your selling 150 items a week its would take me forever to leave all the feedback. Annoying it doesn't work with purchases i have to do this manually. Admittedly i don't always do it.

the fact that the transaction is now resolved does not mean I am happy about it
I just took what I thought would be the easiest and most diplomatic route
hours of my time wasted yesterday with ebay messaging to and fro and later he took to emails and texts . I was unable to persuade him to phone me
I sold a phone on ebay it made £68 I listed it as spares or repair not working
the buyer opened a dispute saying that he had taken it apart and the key pad ribbon was broken and wanted £15 refunding
My reply was I am sorry to here you are not happy with the phone but the listing was accurate and it clearly stated spares or repair key pad inoperative
please return the item in it;s original condition recorded post for a full refund including the £3.65 postage
He closed the dispute

It eventually reached an acceptable conclusion, but not to explain in the comments box would be deception. Therefore it is not an honest record of the transaction.

I really hate sellers that do not leave feedback as soon as I have paid which is the only basis they can leave feedback for, but instead do the "I only leave feedback when you have bit" or even worse hassle me for feedback on a less than good transaction where I would have been happy to leave no feedback, and then they perhaps get feedback they would rather not have had.

I agree that the whole point of feedback is to be able to look at the reputaion of the seller/buyer, but it must be truthful.

.......and it is OPTIONAL not compulsory.

Just my opinion as a buyer and seller.

Heather

I agree with heather
and have had similar experiences
this seller had 950+ positive feed backs at 100% one wouldn't have expected to receive an item in this condition

I've got to say I can't see any reason to leave anything but positive feedback. What you view as him trying to scam you could just as easily be viewed as a genuine honest mistake. He's rectified the situation, has given you an agreeable deal and you have ended up with a bargain. Seems like a pretty happy ending to me.

A short comment along the lines of 'had an issue, seller sorted it, happy customer' would be my assessment.

His description of the lens is far from honest
is it a bargain IMO I would struggle to sell it and would be lucky to receive what I paid for it
would any member on TP want to but a very scratched sigma 30 1.4
he clearly tried to pull a fast one and I have ended up just getting what I can out of the transaction
I would never had bought a lens in this condition at any price I'd be embarrassed to show it to people or offer it for sale as people would think I had done this to the lens

There seems to be different interpretatiosn of this which is why peoples opinion varies.

I tend to sell a lot of things Buy it Now, with Immediate Payment box ticked.
What is the point of leaving any feedback to the buyer in that case?
I always do though and just say "thanks for buying" but that is hardly feedback is it.

As soon as eBay removed the neutral and negative feedback for buyers option the feedback on buyers is pointless and to me should be removed all together. It didn't really have much point before that either as a buyer will awful feedback could still bid with a minute to go and win your item.

Agree. The seller handled the situation well (well compared to many sellers anyway!)
did he
I disagree it took me hours to obtain this outcome
and he was not willing to take the item back or refund any money
I had to remind him that ebay/paypal would refund me
The issue is not resolved yet either my partial refund is an e cheque what ever one of those is for the 5th sept
