Well made compact

Hi there,

Looking to get a new compact for my old man who goes through them like wildfire (probably 10 over the last 10 years). He's not interested in full manual control, raw capabilities or similar but wants basic controls and decent quality (but not pixel peeping by any means).

However the most important thing is that it is well made and something that seems to be brushed over in reviews. Does anyone have any recommendations? Had bad experiences with Nikon compacts and better with a Canon IXUS but open to suggestions.

Have a budget of up to £150 (could buy used for the right one).

Thanks for any help,

Maybe look at one of the 'tough' range from Panasonic and the likes. He could even drop it in the washing up water and it would live.

Samsung EX-1 is a very well made camera. Not too sure of the prices now but it was about £240 this time last year.

I'm very impressed with the quality of the image, the build, the screen (which is a swivelly one) and the menu system. It's the camera I take when I can't carry a DSLR.

Andy

Look out for ones with a metal body, I've been pleased with Canon Ixus models in the past, but my S90 is loads better.
